Can this work??? And how?? I posted this here because I figured you guys mught know the most about this issue. If it is in the wrong place, I am sorry, and please move it around. I have a female yorkie that is almost 3 and is the love of my life, however, she is lonely. She has been around other dogs her entire life with the exception of the time since I got her back in November. She doens't act like a dog, more like a little person. She doesn't know how to play with toys, just her chew bones. I want to get her a playmate as I think it would do her good. She had two litters before coming to me and I have been offered the father as his owners cannot keep him and he is living with a friend of theirs. Here's where the questions and concerns lie... He will be 4 in April. He has never really been housetrained. He has been a stud, for a while. He is currently living with a breeder that has a building out back for her pups...ugh...and he goes in the house and out. Can I ever train him to be a good boy and not mark all of my furniture and my house?? If he comes here he will be promptly neutered, but will that help this late in the game? I know he would be good company for Jolene, but is he the RIGHT company? I really, really, really want him out of that situation, but not at the expense of my hubby killing me for bringing in a 3 lb marking machine into out brand new house? Please help... |
I think that it would and could be possible to house train him. It might be a little more difficult since he was used as a stud dog but that's where belly bands can come into play. |
How is he now at the breeder's house. Does he mark inside of her house? |
Belly bands...  |
He marks some, but also has little supervision there and he's running with a bunch of doggies. Jolene is pad trained, although she misses sometimes. She also will go outside to potty. I am pretty inept at this whole housetraining thing, as she came to me trained, so please help. Any advise would be appreciated. Tell me what to do...Thanks guys, you're the best. |
Anything is possible. With a lot of determination and belly bands it can work. Is your girl spayed? If not I would get her spayed. A girl in heat might bring back old memories to the boy. |

Heck, I don't even know how often they come into heat. When can she be spayed? She ate her panties off...how long will she bleed? Oh dear, I have questions. I got fairly good at helping to take care of the pups once born, but never dealt with any of this other stuff. So, you think I might be able to make this work with a spay and some belly bands? I am certainly willing to give it a shot. Any mentors out there? Thanks a zillion in advance. I will keep you posted on how this turns out... |
You can and should have her spayed about a month after she finishes her heat. Do not rely on belly bands or panties to keep them apart. They must be separated with crating or kept in separate rooms...they can climb gates if they try and want to bad enough. The whining and pacing can make you nuts if you have a low tolerance for it. It will be virtually impossible to train that boy not to mark if you bring him into the house while she's in heat. If you get them both fixed, with luck, consistency and patience you may end up being able to train him. If not, belly bands sre a solution to the marking issue. |
