How long do you have if you want to dock tails and remove dew claws? Just had my first 2 litters of pups and was wondering when to dock their tails and remove dew claws? When is it too late? 2 are a week old today and the others are 24hrs old. Thanks :animal36 |
We allways had ours done on day 3. Im not sure what age they will not do it. Im thinking three weeks but im not sure. Im sure someone will come and answer this soon. |
Our vet will only dock tails and remove dewclaws between 3-5 days old.. If it is after that time period we have to wait until they are old enough to be put under.. |
That's what I've always heard from breeders, between 3-5 days, but I don't know about a week? ... |

I will most definitely take them to my vet. Has anyone ever done this themselves?? I'm a pediatric nurse and have seen/done alot, but don't think I would have the stomach to do that to puppies... |
most vets will not do them after 5-6 days old please consult your vet right away. |
I wouldnt wait past 3 days. This is when I have always done it. My last litter I was late docking them, I just didnt think about docking. It was almost the 6th day. I always heard it was ok until then but not after the 6th day. The dockings seemed to go well. Very little bleeding, puppies got right on mommy and nursed. When I went in an hour later to check on them again. One puppy had turned cold and was barely breathing. She died before I got to the vet. After docking close to 40 tails in the last couple years at 3 days with not the first bit of problems, I chalk this tragedy up to a late docking. I believe she died of shock. She otherwise was a healthy puppy who was gaining weight well and nursing well up to that point. Just from experience I wont be docking tails after 3 days. I think they feel alot more pain after then. If I would have known this would happen I would have had my first litter of full tail yorkies. |
Well, I called our vet and he said we better go ahead and do all their tails and claws today. My hubby had to take them since I was at work, but he said they did well. The vet said that all the pups look good and healthy. Said we shouldn't have to worry about them once we get home. They were all back with their mommas and nursing well when I got home from work. They are all continuing to gain weight everyday. So, hopefully all will go well. Guess next time we have pups I'll know to get in gear sooner. Thanks for all the advice. This site is great and everyone here is so helpful. |
Hmm...our vet's (and our) general rule is within the first 3-5 days. :) |
My vet said between 3 - 5 days . |
A friend in NC had pups ( her dog did actually) ha.. but she said he vet would not do it after day 2. |
The vet where I live Not the one I go to now but the one I use to go to before I got my yorkis would do the tails 3-5 days they would rather do them on day 3 but they will also put them under and do them at age 3 months. I have a friend that had theirs doberman done at 3 months and oh what a mess. they had to return to the vet 3 times because of the stitches ripping out and each time there was so much blood. I felt so sorry for that dog. it did heal and looked good but thats a lot of pain and soreness that poor dog went thru. |
Tinies can go to day 4 maybe even 5 if the vet does it. But, my vet will not do them at that age either. I do my own and day 3-4 is the absolute oldest I will do. Any later and they can have neuro problems if the nerve endings are clipped.. |
