Recommended reading? This advice may have been given before but I can't find it. I would like the name of a good, thorough book regarding breeding. From day 1 of heat to whelping puppies. This is not for Tatum - she's been spayed - but for our Australian Shepherd, Stormie. Her dad (or sire - what do you call him??) is from the Cut 'N Loose Aust. Shep. group and his owner told us when we got Stormie that her markings looked like they would be really nice and wants us to let her know if/when we want to breed her and she would help us find a stud. Well, she's in heat right now so it got me thinking about it. This is her first heat so no, we are definitely not breeding now. In fact, we are being overly freaked-out cautious with her. Because she is solely an "outside dog" that is in an outdoor kennel (chain link style) at night and has run of our property during the day, she is being watched like a hawk. Oh yes, I told my husband about not being able to let her stay in her kennel because of those sly little boys that can "do the deed" through the fence and he thought I was nuts! So, needless to say, she has to stay in the garage or in my husband's shop during the day and night. The only time she's out is when my husband or I are standing there watching her every move. Keep in mind we are out in the country without complete fences (because of cattleguards) so even though I don't know of any male dogs that run free in our area doesn't mean that some from the next county even won't sniff her out and come searching!! Poor baby isn't real sure what she's being punished for but we are trying to make it up to her. Boy, that all said (didn't mean for it to be so drawn out), I'm hoping that someone can recommend a book that has all we could possibly need to know (preferrably in a nice, interesting, readable format) when the time comes for Stormie later. And if you have any advice that I may not have already learned from this great site already for how to deal with Stormie right now, feel free to share. Thanks for taking the time to read and help! |
