full blood panel vs.bile acid test I know alot of breeder's do the bile acid while I have heard other breeder's say to do a full blood panel and go from there. What is everyone's opinion on this? Faith |
Sorry this came up twice.I didn't think the first one posted. |
in my opinion a full blood panel should be done on any (all ) breeding stock. a bile acid is done on puppies. i have had fbp done on all of my adults with exception of my girl who is spayed. bile acid tests are a puppy to puppy basis for me. if i dont feel the need, i dont do it. if i do for any reason, i get it. |
From what I have read, bile acids are not necessarily accurate when done on a very young puppy. However, they are better as a diagnostic tool when a puppy has the symptoms of PSS. If a puppy is healthy- NO symptoms at all-, the vet will be the best source of info to make the decision about which test needs to bo done. Bile Acid tests require a period of fasting that a very young puppy might not handle well and the needs to be taken into consideration... |
Full blood panels do not require fasting. Althought it may not give the actual BA results, it will tell you if there is a problem with the Liver and then I'd would proceed with a BA. I do full blood panels on all my puppies and my adults have had BA and BP. BP are also know as preanesthetic blood work. I have it done on my adults when they go in for dentals, c-sections, spays, whenever they are getting anesthetic. Reason being you don't want to put a dog under anesthetic if there is a problem. Problems are ususally blamed on anesthetic when in fact BP weren't done and there was an underlying problem. Many people don't have the BP done everytime they put a dog under. |
Thanks for everyone's input .I really appreciate it. Do you all do the full blood panels on all your puppies before they go to their new homes? Faith |
I don't routinely do FBP or BA on pups. There is no need if the breeding pairs have been screened, the breeder is aware of the health history of the pedigrees and the pups are healthy. Breeding pairs are regularly checked with blood panels and that would be the first indicator for a problem requiring further tests. |

The above link is from the TSFannymaelivershunt foundation.. I personally think that testing is necessary! If the gene is found to be recessive, you can test your breeders and they can test negative for LS, but still carry the gene to pass it on.. As of date they still have not pin pointed the exact gene.. Alot of breeders also believe in controlled breeding and we do not always hear of LS puppies from certain lines.. I personally do not practice controlled breeding and I feel that if I have brought a puppy into this world it is my responsibility to make sure they are given every opportunity to have a good healthy life! Our vet does complete (full) blood panels and if the numbers would be off we than would do a acid bile test.. |
