How often do you sell dogs knowing it's going to be used for breeding?

While searching for Bailey, I ran across a lot of different breeders out there. I'd say 90% of them asked if I had the intent to breed. I told them I had the intent to show and then later on down the line, if Bailey turned out to be 'breed quality' and got his ch. then yes, I would. Bailey's my only yorkie at this point and probably will be for awhile.

I see so many people that have AKC fully registered dogs (for ex. 1 male & 1 female) that buy the dogs JUST to breed them and wonder where they get them. From puppymills? From byb? From reputable breeders?

So I'm just wondering how many people on this forum sell dogs for breeding purposes? And if anyone does, what kind of stipulations do you put on the contract? If any?

I am not yet a breeder, but I see just the opposite. Either they will not sell a dog with breeding rights or if they do, they charge you an arm and a leg. And most of those that will for extra money dont seem to care where the puppy is going and what kind of home they will have. I have spoken with so many breeders and they never ask about my home/family situation.
Clearly, the problem is I am not speaking to the right people!! :eek:

See, that's what I see too. That's why I'm wondering where these people are getting these dogs from that are full AKC registered.

I've always been under the impression that any reputable breeder wouldn't sell a dog with full rights except to someone that they can help 'mentor' (which is what my situation is) OR someone who's been in the business for a while and has a good reputation.

Well, I think that is part of the problem is that there are a lot of people that are not reputable breeders and put the money before the animal. They dont care what you do with it as long as money is going into their pocket.

Both of my dogs were sold with full AKC and both breeders are in good standing with YTCA and AKC. It's all about your intentions. I don't want to lose my female and understand what has to be done in order to prevent pregnancy. I may show her and if I alter her before then, that door is closed. Both of my breeders grilled me and did reference checks as well as vet checks. I waited a long time before I bought my first dog and was ready when I did. I think there need to be some non-show, quality-not quantity bredders out there. Genetic testing is important as well as pedigree research. But I don't oppose responsible breeding. JUST greedy people. I was always honest with my breeders and they could tell. I wanted them to feel confident when I adopted a baby from them. I pour my heart into something when I do it. Just be honest. It's hard to get full rights from a responsible breeder but it is possible--I am proof. AND I have 2 kids and a rotty. =)-----------------The mentoring thing------both of mine are out-of-state but stay in touch with me almost weekly to see how things are progressing. Constant contact is important--they don't have to stand over you just the fact that you know they will be there if you need them.
MOJO--I agree BUT neither of my breeders needed the money--in fact they placed the dog before i finished paying them off. And no--I didn't pay and arm and a leg---$1200 each. Trusting a buyer and checking every avenue of their life really gives you a good picture to paint of them--they BOTH told me if ANYTHING doesn't check out---we will not place this puppy. I was honest. I'm no BYB or miller just a lover. If my female never birth's a single pup--I won't care. If she does--I'll probably keep them anyway--the more the merrier. Those big black eyes and tiny faces just kill me--steal my heart all over again.

I perfer to place in pet homes, but will help a serious fanicer get started or improve. I do ask that the dogs be bred to quality stock.
The Yorkie club has very strick bylaws about selling with full regs, but they also trust the breeder to use good judgement. Belonging to the Yorkie clubs still does not make a person reputable..I know some terrifc breeders with tiptop stock who do not belong to clubs.

Now that I re-read my post it sounds like I'm asking where to buy a full akc reg'd dog. I'm not. This is just a question that I've been wondering about for a while now.

MY HUSBAND WANTS A FEMALE FOR A FRIEND FOR SIRIUS. WE HAVE TALKED TO BREEDERS AND HAVE NOT HAD LUCK IN FINDING ONE WHO WOULD SELL OR ONE WHO WE THOUGHT WAS A GOOD BREEDER. OUR INTENT IS TO KEEP THE DOOR OPEN FOR ONE DAY IF WE WANT A BABY FROM OUR BABIES TO HAVE ONE. NOT TO BREED AND MAKE MONEY. IT WOULD BE ONE LITTER IF IT HAPPENED AND THE PUPPIES WOULD STAY WITH US. I FOUND ONE BREEDER WHO CLEARLY RAN A MILL THAT TOLD US NO ONE WOULD SELL FOR THAT REASON. TIME WILL TELL :cool:

I'm sorry but I have to disagree with some of you. I dont think it makes a breeder a bad person if they DONT 'grill' a buyer on what they intend to do with a puppy, which on average they pay at least $1000.00 for, I'm sorry but if I'm going to pay that much for a dog unless my papers state anything different, that is my dog to do what I want to with it! It doesnt make my breeder a bad person, and I dont think you need to do an interview for a puppy its not a job, most people that spend that much on a dog obviously arent persay 'trashy' people, that are MORE than likely going to take good care of their puppy. The breeder I bought my babies from has been doing it for over 30 years in good standing by two different associations. So are you implying that makes her a bad breeder, by letting me have breeding rights on my male that I paid a $1000.00 for? She is an older woman that LOVES the breed doesnt do it for the money, I think so many of you on here try to put certain breeders in your own categories such as back yard breeders puppymills and such most people shouldnt be so judgemental!

I am not trying to catagorize or judge - and I am not a breeder. I am in no way saying your breeder is a bad breeder. And you are right, it is not a job interview, it is much more important, we are talking about innocent lives.
Spend a day watching animal cops and people that have money, people that have expensive pets and see the horrible conditions these poor animals are kept in or how horribly these animals are abused.
It would make you cry; I know it makes me cry.
My concern is only for the animals and I feel that my yorkie is like one of my children and if I ever decide to breed her you better believe I am going to know about the kind of family those puppies are going to.
Again, not judging you, not judging your breeder, I dont know you but there are a lot of bad people out there who could really care less about the poor animals that are entrusted to them and that is what breaks my heart.

Well many of you would call me a BYB. I dont limit registration....so I guess in many of your eyes Im one of those irresponsible breeders. Several I know havent registered their yorkie and dont plan on it. I also have some CKC yorkies (continenal club) I guess thats another no no.
DO I take offense to this, maybe a little, but I take it in stride.

I apologize if I offended anyone, that was not my intention. I will step off my soapbox now. :confused:

KELLY...I do not care what people think about me. I have been in the Yorkie world for over 30 yrs. I have been treated fair by a few and like crap by many.
Long ago..and if you are reading this JERRY..Yes, it was in the dark ages! LOL
Long ago I decided I, ME, Pat would be the person to please with the decisions I made regarding the type breeder I wanted to be.
Many unpleasant situations made me go by a list of hard rules when it comes to my Yorkeis.
I lost a few innocent pups to unreputable breeders, liars and cheats..they wnd up caged and bred until they were of no use to the breeder.
So in order for me to sleep well and be happy with the breeder I am I decided on limited regs, spay/neuter, grill them till the drop, etc.
I will help a serious hobby breeder, I will not feather a millers kennel.

Kelly, if you are happy with the type of breeder you are, never, never apologize. IF you are open to new ideas and learning..and you would not be here if you weren't, then we all can learn from others..even me and old Jerry.

We all learn by experience...and I do love all the threads.......whether controversial or not! Sure some things said kinda touch a nerve but its okay! I think Ive touched a nerve a few times my self to other people! LOL......I am truly interested in learning, its okay to disagree.
Theres lots of things I want to improve in my program but its gonna take time.
