Terrified **help** I got the impression that as longs as the male dog (3.2lb) is smaller than the female (3.7) then it was ok to breed. After reading a couple of blogs, I am terrified for my dog. I didn't know how risky and dangerous it was to breed dogs under 5lbs. Her parents were both around 4-5lb and the father's were small too. Is there steps I can take to ensure the best possible path until birth? maybe give it to the care of hospital before birth? They just mated 2 days ago but I'm freaking out here. |

Your female is very small to breed. Im sure some of the breeders on here will come and give you some good info on it. I know you can get xrays done to see if the puppies heads will be to big for her to deliver and if so you can set up a c_section ahead of time. You will have to wait untill she is further along for the xrays on the head size. I wouldn't panic just yet as the chances are that she will be fine but I am not a breeder or a vet and a vet is what you need to advise you right now. I would call your regular vet and ask if he is qualified to do an evaluation of your girl's ability to safely deliver a litter of pups. I would inquire about the possibility of taking her to a reproductive specialist if there is one in your area or not too far away. A vet familiar with breeding yorkies would be the best to take her to imo. I would do this right away as the sooner you find out your options for her the better. I would also try to find a mentor who can train and teach you quickly what you need to know to provide her with the best care during her pregnancy, to prepare for the whelping and to provide the best care for mom and pups after birth. There is a lot to know and an experienced breeder is a must for you. Preferably someone who is close by and can be there when your girl goes into labor of she is pregnant. Good luck. |
Hello, Yes, it is can be risky and dangerous to breed under the 5 lbs. mark but even 5 lb'er have problems. Talk to your Vet about your concerns, and about x-rays to see if she will need a C-Section or if she will be able to have them natural.. Read everything you can. See if your Vet can recommend a breeder near you to talk to and help you through the birthing process. I wish you the best of luck....Sherry |
Hmmm...I think I agree with everyone here so far--you need to speak with a vet that has a great deal of experience with reproduction or a reproduction specialist--whichever you can find. It will be good to get a head start in case she is pregnant, but at only 2 days, I would think it's certain you may have to wait before you can get 'concrete' answers. Chances are she may be fine delivering, chances are she may not. This is true with any size or breed dog. IMO, it is best to be as prepared as you can and have a plan for every situation that may arise...much better that trying to wait until the last minute. |
I feel for you and can understand your fears but with any luck maybe she didn't get pregnant(keeping fingers crossed) If not and if she were mine I would sure not try a repeat breeding. Your little girl is very small to breed at 3 and a half lbs. Experienced reputable breeders will sell this size girl for pets for this very reason, no matter how perfect she may be. After following all the good advice you have been given, find everything you can about whelping, and read, read, read. There are numerous websites as well as books available to study during the next 9 weeks. The more you know, the more calm you will be when the time comes. There are many things you can do to prepare for this event and there are many things you will need to have on hand, i.e. heating pads, whelping box, towels, suction, hemostats . . . .My most important advice is to not be too slow in getting her to a vet when the time comes, should there be any indication of trouble. She is small but her parents were 4-5 lbs. That means that she could have pups that will take after their grandparents and be too big to pass. You need to get with a good vet. The further she is along, they can do x-rays to determine if she'll be able to have them normally. Otherwise, you'll be looking at a c-section. Best of luck. |

spaying If I was truly terrified and afraid of the risk of death or complications for my bitch, I would wait until she is out of heat in a week, then spay her. Spaying a one week pregnant bitch adds litttle or nothing to the risk factor..you have to remember at that age they are only visable through a microscope. Good Luck to you. |
