Bad Milk :wavey: Hi YT Breeders. Have any of you ever had a Mom with Bad/Toxic Milk? If so what were the symptoms of Mom and/or puppies? And what course of treatment did you take? |
No, I haven't experienced this, but if anyone has, I'm all ears :) |
Ive never had toxic milk thank god.....check for swelling, hotness, blood in the milk, hard teats or sore and cracked nipples. you have a problem?? this is something I wouldnt hesitate taking my girl to the vet or take a sample of her milk in...toxic milk can cause fading puppy and you would be none the wiser until its too late... hope this helps |

milk I have never experinced it..a friend thought perhaps her pups died due to it..so the vet told her she could buy test strips to test the acidity in the milk..I have no idea where to buy it. These are the areas of our forum where it would be so nice if the long time show breeders would post..I realize it is NY time, but perhaps when they return you might ask this again. |

This desease is called Canine Mastitis . |
Canine Mastitis is a mammary infection where as Toxic Milk Syndrom can either be caused my mammary or uterine infection. hope this helps |
never had that before but now I kind of know what to watch for..... Thanks :) |
A few years ago, I posted on another forum and a person who had an OOPS breeding involved every member (I think) in helping her with the litter of 4 puppies. Long story to that but the point here is, the mom developed Canine mastitis when the puppies were 2-4 days old. First one nipple became red, inflammed and sore and hard. The vet diagnosed and I think, started amoxycillen. The nipples began to be infected one by one and not one nipple could be used for nursing. The hooman put onesy's on the mom, wrapped her, tube-sox and every thing to keep the pups away from the milk. The milk is infectous it seems. All the puppies survived but one had a cleft lip and all stayed in the family or went to friends, I think. Humans had to get up every 2 hours and feed the babies, let mom lick to pee and poop them and spend some time with them. That went on til the babies were weaned. |

Lilli had a touch of it two weeks ago when she started to wean the pups, So I had to get the milk out and put her on Antibotics and now she is all dried up but it seemed like she never dried up any after the pups stopped nursing the milk would just keep building up and it did get hot, and her tits was very hard and you could tell it hurt her, but she is all better now and all dried up. |

There was just a discussion on another list about toxic milk and it was said that the milk will be yellow and sticky. Normal milk is whitish and not sticky. The pups will die from it and should be bottle/tube fed if you think the mom has toxic milk. |

Are you sure it was toxic milk then, and not something else? |

She is 9mos and very healthy. Her name is Matahnay, it's african for "one who steals from death". So I have come to the conclusion it was something in mom's milk. |
could it have been that the mom's milk just was not enough, I had a litter where they were not getting enough from the mother and I had to also tube/bottle feed them in addition to mom's feeding them. She just was not supplying enough for them to grow. |

Yes Lilli's was Yellow and Sticky, This is a very scary thing always feel and make sure the belly is not hot you can tell cause it gets very hot, Thanks goodness I caught this in time and they pups where done nursing, But Lilli had so much dang milk it was awful I didnt think she was ever going to dry up, But all is good.. |
In order to facilitate the mom's milk reduction at weaning you need to restrict fluids severely and food for 24 hours. Also, wrapping the breast will help. And, of course, do not let the puppies nurse except for about 10 mins at night.. |
