Docked Tail Too Short? I was wondering if the little docked tailes ever grow in length afterward as the pup grows? This little gal I got yesterday has just a little nub. The lady I got her from was a one time only breeder and had her vet do it. She said he asked her and she told him whatever he thought it ought to be. Well, I sure hope it grows because it almost looks like she is tailess. I drove several hours to pick her up and the lady almost changed her mind because her daughter was crying so i didn't check her out very well. I more or less "grabbed her and ran". Silk has a 'show dock" whatever that is and Ceeby's is a lot longer than Dixies. |
I think my Bear has his docked a little too short as well, its there but he tucks it in all the time making it look like he has no tail at all. He is just a pet and we do not plan to show him, we love him no tail and all :) Congrats on your new baby and I sure hope you post pics :) |
I have the opposite problem I think they didn't dock Wosie's enough!! I am betting your little girl's tail will grow a bit, and I am sure she will be fine. I did NOT even KNOW you were thinking of another pup!! PICTURES PLEASE!! Welcome, new little baby!! :aimeeyork |
Awww they look cute no matter how long their tails are:) I don't think your babies tail will get any longer in proportion to her body now, but her hair will grow and make it look longer. |

My Bell's tail is too short and never grew, I think a lot of vets cut them to short, as my Petey's is also just a nub. But Lilly's tail is the best.. I never cut my own tails but as I look at Lilly's I think she must have one more joint left in. |
The tail will not grow any more. A show tail is a correct length. But if you're not showing it does'nt matter. :animal36 |
Bummer about the breeder Quote:
Have fun! :p |
I think maybe Vivi's tail was docked too short....She has to wiggle her whole backside to make it wag :) |
My Penny has a nub of a tail... she was from my first litter of pups 3 years ago... I was in Florida when the pups were born ... so they were born at the vets office... I got back the evening of the third day... and I had the vet remove the dew claws and I told him to "dock their tails" before I got back.... YUP... he docked them alright...!! Now I stand there and point to where I want the pups tailed docked. I don't think the other yorkies talk about my Penny's nub all that much!!! I do see them snicker every once in awhile.... :D :D :D Your baby will just wag her butt.... I am sure she is precious... best of luck with her. |
show dock thanks everyone for your comments. I bet most of the vets around here don't even know what a 'show dock" is. Not too many people in Ky even get into showing and those few that do, dock their own tails. |
My yorkie Lola, has a nicely docked tail. It is not a stub but it is not like a finger or anything. My min pin Penny has a stub but it fits her because she is so petite. Eva and Rocko my other min pins both have long docked tails. They look like a finger saying no to you when they wag! I love all my pups anyways. But a nice looking docked tail adds to the pups' look. They are all cute no matter what anyways. |
Some tails are so short that the hair is always crusted with poo. Skylar ahs such a short tail that I cannot let ANY hair hang from the bottom side of her tail. I love the longer cuts. I do the clamp and twist method and I place the clamp about 1/8 to 1/4 inch from where the brown stops and the black begins. That suits me fine. |
What is the correct lenghth to cut when pup is 1 day old,my vet cuts where the brown hair starts..is that correct or not? |
Gracie has a little nub. Rebel's is a little longer. When I had these pups done, I had them taken off about 1/8 inch from the brown. Looks GREAT! You can actually see them wag when they're happy! |
Personally, I think one day of age ois too young to do the tail. the baby needs to be a bit more established in its nursing, etc. I like a longer tail so I do them at least leaving a quarter of an inch of the black showing and all the brown. One way to judge is to dock where the tail starts to get thinner... |
I think Tatum's is a perfect length but I have to laugh at Stormie, our Australian Shepherd, all the time because she has NO TAIL. That's standard for that breed I think but it's kinda funny to see her wag her whole butt! :D |
