Breeding my yorkie Can anyone give advice?
 

Hello my name is Crystal.
My yorkies name is Molly. She is 11 weeks old. I want to breed her once before I get her spayed. I have bred a yorkie, so I don't know anything about breeding. I know she is still a baby, but aI want to find out as much as I can about breeding yorkies, before she comes into heat. I would be greatful for any information that anyone can give me. Does anyone know about how much it will cost to have her bred? How do I go about finding a good breeder? How do I register the puppies? Any info would be very helpful.

Hi Crystal and welcome to Yorkie Talk!! Congratulations on your new little one! :D

I am not a breeder but my best advice to you is to find an experienced, reputable yorkie breeder who will mentor you and teach you everything. It is very risky to breed yorkie females, there is a higher than normal rate of complication due to their size and other factors so you have to be willing to risk losing her before you decide to breed her.

If you decide after all of your months or research, reading and hopefully attendance at a couple of whelpings that you still want to breed your baby....then...

When she matures some, usually around her first heat you should have a pre-mating evaluation done by a canine reproduction specialist vet. They do all the necessary tests to determine her suitabilty for breeding and they evaluate her pelvic capacity.

Do you know her genetic background and her lines back several generations? You will need to know this to choose the appropriate male for her.

Anyway, you will get lots of advice here from some very experienced breeders but don't be surprised if they do their best to talk you out of it.....it takes a very special person to be a good yorkie breeder....I, for one, do not have what it takes and I am the first to admit it. :)

I want to breed her because I know some friends that would like a yorkie and I think she would be a good mom. Is that a bad reason?

You have at least a year or more to decide. Why not stay on YT and start reading the archives...the questions you are asking may not apply by the time your girl is of age.

She is far to young to make these decisions yet and you have a lot of home work to do. This is a very good site that will outline many of your upcoming questions as she matures http://www.debbiejensen.com/

When she reaches 6-7 months old have her evaluated by a reputable breeder in your area who will assist you in your decision, does her over all quality and size represent the AKC breed standard? Then take her to your vet for a physical evaluation. Final decision should be made after you have liver shunt testing, blood panels and LP's checked.

Be prepared for the good, the bad and the ugly when having her evaluated.

If she passes all evaluations hopefully the breeder that assisted in her evaluation may be willing to find a stud that best suits her quality and mentor you.

You have definitely come to the right place. I too am an aspiring breeder and we beginners have A LOT to learn! I have a wonderful mentor and someone who I lovingly think of as my advisor. I don't know what I would do without them and I am still just in the learning process.

There are many very knowledgable breeders on this site who try to help others as much as possible. As time permits, I would recommend that you go through past threads (especially in the breeder section) and I say as time permits because it would take you weeks to get through it all. I guarantee by the time you are 1/2 way through some of the posts you will have to do a lot of soul searching to decide whether or not this is something you really want to do.

I agree with Pat about the info contained in the archives. In your post, you qrite " I have bred a Yorkie before, so I don't know anything about breeding." Did you mean you have NOT bred before?
I have one question to ask and you will find good info to help you answer this...Are you willing to take a chance on the life of your PET? That may be a moot point if she is say 6 pounds or more. Would her breeder be willing to let you use one of her unrelated studs AFTER your pet has been evaluated? I would ask now so you can have some idea about what a stud owner should be looking for in a female...

I agree with the YT members who have posted on this thread. Breeding dogs is more than sticking to dogs together. This is a touchy subject for me because I have seen and felt the heartbrake . I have just posted a reply on Breeders Talk that has recently happened to me and I have a lot of experience. Please do your research, and heed the warnings. :confused:
