Weight gain during preg. Our girl Madie is suppose to be about 2 1/2 weeks pregnant (and our first litter), and has put on 3/4 of a pound already. She is normally right @ 4 3/4 pounds, now she is 5 1/2. I've visited every web site (even debbijensen) and no one really says anything about weight gain. I'm just curious if any one has kept track of their dogs weight during preg. And does this seem to be too much for only this far along? Everything I've read says she shouldn't start to show until 5 weeks. there is very little about weight gain. I consider this quit a considerable change in her size (it would be like me gaining 25 lb). She isn't "showing" yet, or what i would call showing. Her side don't go in at the end of her ribs, but her belly don't stick out. But even my friend comment that she feels alot heavier. any info would be great. Both of our females are PG, Roxie is a week behind madie, and the only change in her is that she has boobies now. I think I'm going to keep a weight gain journal for them. so that if this question ever comes up again I'll have an answer. I know that every dog is different and that the size of the dog matters, but any example would help. |
I've never paid attention to the amount of weight that Gracie gained. I just let her free feed on puppy food (which will make them gain weight). Her first litter, she gained over 3 lbs. The second litter was right around 3 lbs. You don't want to hold back since she needs the nutrients. However, an over weight dog can have difficulty if they gain TOO much weight. What does your vet say? |
I have never monitored my girl's weight during pregnancy. When they "go off" food around week 3-4, then I am fairly sure they are pregnant. I do supplement with 1/2 vitamin tablet daily during pregnancy. You are right about them showing around 5 wks gestation. At 6 weeks, I increase their food intake to smaller meals 3 x per day. As their abdoman grows, I find they can't eat the same amount prior to pregnancy. If you are concerned talk with your vet. As another post stated, if they become too fat, then you can have complications during whelp. Good luck with your litters. Julie |
You guys must have either really big yorkie girls or big puppies.... my girls gain around 1 - 2 pounds... their puppies range between 2 to 5 ounces. The average litter size is 4. My Wilma and Lucy recently had 2 pups each... they probably gained a little over a pound each... which on a 5 pound yorkie is alot. (3 pounds????.... my girls would be dragging their tummies!!!). I think the weight gain must vary with the size of the mom and the number of pups. Best of luck with Madie's pregnancy!!! :) |
Madie is only 4.5 lbs to start with and is just under three weeks along. Right now she weighs 5.5 lb. Which she has another 6 weeks to go, and I know that the pups will grow alot during the last part of her preg. That is why I'm concerned and started this thread. I didn't know what was the "norm". I know that there are a lot of factors that figure in with it, but I was curious what the average is. For instance do they typically gain 25% of their body weight (1 lb for a 4 lb dog or 1.5 for a 6 lb dog) or 50% (so 2 lb for a 4 lb pooch). I know that there is no guidelines set in stone I'm just looking for examples. I have a friend coming over today that has been gone for over a week and I'm curious to see what she thinks. All of my other friends that have picked her up can tell a difference in her weight. So far she isn't looking preg. just weighs more. Don't worry I'm not going to ration her food or anything. I'm not worried that she'll gain too much weight, I'm just wondering what to expect. Also we are going to go to the vet next week for an ultrasound. They have to be at least 3 weeks along to do one my vet says. I'm so excited. We live in a very rural area (400 people in our town and the town where the vet is is 30 miles away, it has 1,500 people) so not very many people here have that sort of thing done. It only cost $25 to have it done here. That seems really cheap. How much did any of you pay? |
