Genetic Testing Who did you use for genetic testing as far as labs go? I have found canine health check and optimal, also embark and wisdom. Also is there another test that needs to be done/patella testing? Where do you have this done a Vet or a Orthopedic? Want to ensure all testing is performed on all my kids :D |
:confused:Really? Have any of the breeders on here done genetic testing on their dogs prior to considering breeding them? What about having the patella testing done on their dogs prior to breeding them? Anyone? 71 people have looked at this post, nobody has information on which labs to use? Any information on getting patellas tested, then certified, is it by xray? No information on this? Looking for guidance/advice from the experts. |
There are very few breeders on here anymore and the ones that do come only do it randomly. As a breeder you also need to know the lines of your breeding dogs to make sure no health issues ran in the lines because it’s not just based on the two dogs your breeding. There are very few actual genetic test for Yorkies so those company’s that say they are checking for over 100 or whatever genetic issues doesn’t mean Yorkies and probably several other breeds. I suspect you should go to an orthopedic specialist to check hips and knees and then a othomologists to check eyes and so on. You also need a mentor that can help you with this and helping which could be very dangerous for your female if you don’t know every little sign of distress. |

We Yorkie folks need good breeders so hat off to you! Consider going to the YTCA site and reading what is there. You might also want to consider joining if you are interested in breeding. Finding a mentor is imortant but you may already have that. The hardest part for me is understanding the judges decisions and how that relates to the breed standards! |
OK here we go. Patellas any good vet can check for, through manuall manipulation of knee joints. Not sure if you have one of those go to an ortho. I usually do most of the rest at health clinics run at various shows. Cerf for eyes, blood draws for thyroid testing, Baer hearing tests, sometimes heart tests are available too. I go to an ortho for hips elbows one that is experienced to submit the offa forms, but more. Importantly do the right views of the joints. As I am in Canada well any one I know is useless to you. |
