First Time Whelping please advise Hello my baby girl Leila is having her first litter. She mated from June 19th th June 26th. Her belly has definitely dropped and when she licks herself it feels hard but I do not think these are contractions as her stomach is somewhat soft when she lays on her back/side. She lost a bit of jelly discharge which I assumed was part of her mucus plug. That was on Sunday. She has almost stopped eating completely for about 3 days as well. Here's the kicker, she still has energy somehow. Although its less than normal of course, she still barks and jumps up if someone is coming home. The puppies have been moving like crazy for at least a week. Temp has remained 99-100 (been checking twice daily for a week) My question is, how can she be having all of the symptoms of a dog about to go into labor, and still be a a little wild(in a super sweet way) Thank you so much in advance for anyone who may see this and comment!! |

Do you not have a mentor working with you that you can ask. There are very few breeders in this community these days. I would def. contact your vet before it becomes to late, you may lose your mamma and the babies. Vet ASAP Please. |
It is very scary that you are doing this without a mentor because you could be risking her life not knowing what you are doing. Did you get X-rays to know how many puppies she is having? I recommend you stay in close contact with your vet. If her starting weight was under 5 pounds there is a real possibility that she will need a c-section. |
Good luck to you and your Leila. If you look through past messages and notes there is a wealth of info there about what you'll need in supplies and feeding of mom after the delivery. She should be about due and it probably is a good idea to see the vet with her just to make sure how many she is having and if it might look like she needs a C section |
I have a mentor and she informed me Leila jist isnt ready. She is also on call and lives very close so she will help deliver the puppies. She says because the puppies are still moving so actively they likely arent in position. I was just curious if anyone elses Yorkie still pranced around up until whelping day . Thank you all for your input!! :) |
If the mother is strong, they can be chipper and energetic until the day they give birth, Animals really can't afford to go on bed rest in the wild and that has not changed since we domesticated them. Its possible she is not having that many pups or they are small and not making her very uncomfortable. The due date was on the 21st according to the first day you mated her but semen can live in the female for several days after the tie so it is possible she was not impregnated until after the last tie. Sometimes it takes on the first tie but not always. That is just the earliest date you need to watch for to be safe, give or take a few days. If you are worried or she is in distress or in pain then trust your gut and take her to the vet but most likely she just is not ready. |
Thank you very much!!! I will post an update by tomorrow. Thank you again!! |
