When and how often do you breed? Hi all! This is my first post and I am hoping to not get a plethora of negative comments as I've seen so many others get in the past. I've been a member for over a year and have read many threads to learn and gain information when I have questions and concerns along with many books and online information. I have spoken to a few breeders about when they start breeding and how often they breed. Some start at age 2 and breed 2 heats on and one off. Others start on second heat and go every other heat. I am curious to hear from the breeders on this site what they do given that the dam is healthy and handles pregnancy well. Thank you in advance for your KIND comments and answers. :) |
Honestly if you want to be a good breeder you need to find a mentor which a lot will do this by going to dog shows and trying to become friends with some of the breeders. Those are the lines that you generally want continues not just random lines and you will need all you can learn from the mentor. You can't just learn everything by books you need to see and experience with a well experienced breeder or you could miss something and end up risking your females and her puppies lives. There are very few breeders that post here anymore. |
Breeding There are two schools of thought on breeding. (1) States that you should let the girl rest between litters. (2) I've read from a well known VET that an active uterus is a healthy uterus. The chances of a dog getting pyometra or other reproductive disease increase when not bred. If girl's weight and emotional state is good and healthy, breed each cycle for a short time and spay upon her retirement. I tend to agree with the second opinion; my girls have a short breeding career and then are spayed. |
As already stated, a mentor is very important as everything you will encounter in breeding isn't found in a book. My mentor is the breeder that I purchased my first Yorkie from. I agreed with her breeding philosophy, her puppy training and her compassion for her bitches, so our relationship works well. You don't want your mentor to be someone whose breeding philosophy completely conflicts with everything you and your vet believe is best however, you might have minor differences but always keep your mind open to learn new and different information and methods. One of my bitches is expecting 6-7 pups, so you best believe my mentor is involved and is important to my successfully whelping this litter! My opinion on your question is, I breed every other heat after the heat closest to age 2 and up to age 5. I follow the one heat on, one off philosophy. This works for me and my bitch but I also understand the breeding every heat and then retirement method. There is no one answer. |
