Studding help Hello, my little guy is 1 yr. old and I am told that he is ready for studding although I don't know where to start. Bailey is 5 lbs. 6 oz., the same size as his father. I was hoping maybe someone could give me some tips on how to start studding him out. Thank you for any assistance you can provide. |
There are lots of things to consider when using a male at stud . Like evaluating him ( qualities , faults ) , from which line is he ? Do you have pictures of him ? |
First have him checked by your vet for any health problems. Second: Is he a good representation of the breed? All colors in the right place, correct coat texture, good straight teeth? Then you will want to have his DNA tested by AKC.(go to their website) Then make sure all the females that you will be breeding him with are in good health, get a health certificate from their vet. And also all of the above on the females.. Then of course the first time he isn't proven so it would probably be either a freebie or very cheap. These are just some of the things you must consider before you attemp breeding him. |
What do studs actually "get" for their services? A puppy, money, plasma TV? Do stud parents keep track of his babies? Very interested in how it works. |
I have never stud out before, But I hear its a couple of hundred, not a puppy, because Yorkies might only have one!! I would believe this is not an easy thing as I also hear the stud dogs end up peeing all over your house marking everything!! |
It is true that male dogs that are not fixed pee on everything marking their territory. I have struggled with this for a year now and am just now able to get Bailey to go pee outside although he still thinks my white carpet is a pooping playground. |

When we breed Mollie I didn't have a bit of problems with the stud. He was great. Very well behaved(sp). |
You are most likely gonna lose the sweet little non-marker you have finally managed to train. Your boy needs a 25 gen pedigree. A health history of those ancestors. He needs a blood panel to test for any current problems-LS, diabetes, kidneys and so on. A full physical and be ceared for heart murmurs, LP's, LCP of hips. Then he needs to be evaluated for his faults-prick ears? level topline? decent coat? bite? and there are others. Then you need to find a person with a female that will use him for breeding based on what these tests and evaluations show. An unproven male and female, can be an iffy project. Sometimes there is simply a service charge for a stud fee and if no puppies result, a refund of any money is in order. Any studding should be covered by a very thorough contract... Since you seem to be just beginning i this endeavor, I would suggest you do a lot more research with an experienced breeder to mentor you..There is so much to breeding these Yorkies.. |

stud Who told you he was ready for studding? Just curious! |
Sheila When you bred your female, did you use your own stud dog..does he live in the house with your female and does not mark? Good for you..you are one of the very few who has a clean Yorkie stud. |

plasma tv??? lmao...so he can watch Animal Planet in high definition and chew the remote to his hearts content. sorry...I just had to chuckle here...for real advice refer to whispersmom and Yorkie Rose |
post The stud asks for no compensation other then his services..at least mine never hit me up for anything. I, on the other hand had to look out for their future and charged a stud fee. Once in awhile I got a litter pick..not often..most pay and keep them all. Some of the bitch owners would allow me to place the pups for them and then I knew they were okay as a rule..others are anywhere and everywhere and that is hard...I hope they are all loved. |
Oh, sorry about the 25 gen ped. Wouldn't that be a real treat? Actually, I meant 5 gen ped. Obviously, I didn't proof-read my post before I hit the SUBMIT button |
