Looking for a reputable breeder in PA & Ohio Hi! I am new to this forum. I've been visiting this website and reading the posts about 200 times a day! My family and I agreed to bring home a Yorkie, and since it is my first time raising a dog in this country, we want to get in touch with a reputable breeder (so we have better access to information when we need). I am in Pittsburgh but I am willing to drive up to 3-4 hours...I don't want to have a little puppy fly all the way since they're so fragile and sensitive to stress(let me know if I am wrong - my last dog was not a yorkie.) If anyone knows of a reputable breeder around Western PA, Eastern OH, Northern VA, and maybe MD, your help will be greatly appreciated. I have looked into the YTCA breeder referral list and have contacted most of them and a few others I could find in this website. So far, I've had no luck. Anyone familiar with littleyorkies.com? I am looking into preferably a male up to six months. A healthy, loving pet is all I need. Thank you for all your help in advance! Merry Christmas! |

I just checked their website, there is a LOT of emphasis on the words TINY, SMALL, LITTLE, sire weighs 3.8 Lbs. RED FLAG, she is hiding the fact that she breeds for only "tiny" dogs. I use the word HIDE because she doesn't state she breeds for tiny dogs, she knows that would cause a lot of controversy. Yorkie standard size should be 5 to 7 pounds. A "reputable" breeder would not use the words tiny, small, little, as a reputable breeder breeds to standard size (5 to 7 Lbs). That is not to say a reputable breeder would not have a smaller puppy in a litter, it happens often, but not deliberately breeding for "tiny" pups. Tiny pups are very fragile, much care must be given to owning these tiny 3 + Lb lil critters, as adorable as a tiny is they have more health issues, fragile bones, they cannot jump off high things like sofas or beds, there is danger of breaking bones. In my opinion I would not buy from littleyorkies because it is very clear she breeds for under standard puppies and hides that fact. Finding a honest and reputable breeder is work and time consuming but pays off in the end with a good, healthy puppy that falls into the standard weight. Good luck on your quest in finding that perfect puppy. Happy Holidays to you and your family. |
Thank you so much for your input Matese and lovetodream88! I’ll continue with my search. I SO wish I had a picture of my dog in the avartar like you two :) Merry Christmas and happy holidays! |

I was under the impression for ring showing a yorkie must be with-in the standard weight, 5 to 7 pounds but will accept a pup a bit under 5 pounds but not a tiny. I do want to be giving anyone that may read this thread the wrong information that a 1.5 or 2.5 pound yorkie will be accepted to show. |
Actually to show, the standard is 7 pounds or less, but the fact is a 4 or 5 pound Yorkie will have a difficult time finding a judge who will award them the points needed to finish. Judges have their own biases in the areas of weight, color, gate, top line, etc. that will make a difference with how a pup does. |
I have been researching what you stated "The standard is actually not to exceed 7 pounds no minimum". If there is no minimum weight on "standard" yorkie, then why does every article have a "minimum" weight. This is what I keep reading, these are from only 3 links, just wondering you say NO minimum, yet every article has minimum to maximum. I just want correct information to be posted is all. • Breed Group: Toy • Height: 8 to 9 inches at the shoulder • Weight: 4 to 7 pounds, sometimes larger • Life Span: 12 to 16 years Yorkies are a small dog and should weigh 5 to 7 pounds. They are disqualified from American Kennel Club showing events if they weigh more than 7 pounds. Their height is about 6 or 7 inches from ground to shoulder, and the height at the shoulder should be the same as the height at the rump. • Show dogs should weigh between four to seven pounds, but pet Yorkies can weigh as much as 12 to 15 pounds. A Yorkie who weighs less than four pounds is more prone to health problems, and more likely to suffer complications while under anesthesia. |

Wording on threads are very important to new members. Here is the description from "Yorkshire Terrier Club of America" Weight...Must not exceed seven pounds. And that is that, NOT TO EXCEED 7 pounds, again, It does NOT say 7 pounds and under is standard yorkie size. |
