Question about male with prostate enlarged I’m new to the forum but have had a Yorkie male for 11years. He is unaltered and has had one litter with my mom’s female before she was spayed. His prostrate has become enlarged and the vet has recommended neutering him to avoid health problems. I would love a puppy from him before we consider this surgery. He is AKC and CKC registered and I have his pedigree-he has two champions on his sire’s side. I am not interested in starting a breeding program. His temperament is sweet and mild. Has anyone any experience with prostate enlargement? What health risks are there? Also, any suggestions for me to find a female? I’m not interested in stud fees-just a healthy puppy. We live in Ohio. Thanks, Dawn |
I would go ahead and just get him fixed and buy a puppy from a reputable breeder. The prostate should go back to normal after neutering. I would think he is a bit old to mate. |

Yes-he just said Tobey could develop masses and begin to have elimination problems. Seemed vague. |

I think what you should be asking is what caused the enlargement? I have owned many unfixed dogs and never had to deal with anything of that matter. As far as finding a female to stud your male to you're going to run into a few problems 1. Being you'll have to tell the dams owner of his possible health risk and they might not want to risk their dam or risk future puppies also developing the same condition if it's genetic 2. He's really old and male dogs just like human males sperm quality starts to degrade as they get older and into their senior years. He may very well not even be able to sire a litter. |

I highly doubt he'll produce any babies @ 11 years old (low sperm count). Not to scare you but enlarged prostate in unneutered older males can lead to prostate cancer. I had a 9 year old Doberman who suffered that fate. He was my x-boyfriend's dog but I took care of him in his golden years. Best to neuter him per vet's advice. |
