question about labor i got out of bed this morning and found my pregnant female hiding under the bed. she came out enough to let me pet her. but when any of my other dogs came around she growled at them so i made her a bed in the cage where i want her to deliver and put her in there. she seemed restless and then wanted out of the cage but i didn't let her. she is due january 22. now she keeps looking at me and shivering and some panting. is this labor or is she just acting like that because she wants out of her cage? i squeezed her teats and no milk came to the surface. i don't have a thermometer to check her temp and my husband is gone for the day so i can't go buy one. does this sound like labor to everyone?   |
if she is panting she very well might be in labor. You should have her in a room by herself no other dogs theyre a threat in her mind and she will defend if feeling threatened. YOU WANT YOUR MOM CALM! I also suggest a cage is not where you want her to whelp. You want to have the ability to access her or the babies if she needs your assistance. Have a heating pad wraped in a towel for the babies as they're born if they get chilled they can die. Gosh there is so much to explain and very little time for you to understand. If youve never whelped you need to look for signs of labor please read this site it will be helpful...but first and foremost have your vets number ready and your car keys handy...If you dont understand what your doing you could jeapordize your moms life and her new babies, then you need to make a decision to have the vet help you. http://www.debbiejensen.com/whelping.html http://www.debbiejensen.com/normal_whelp.html http://www.debbiejensen.com/livebirth.html hope this helps |
the cage i have is big and the top comes off and i can get in there with her but right now she is laying down and resting. maybe i jumped the gun. if she is in labor then those symptoms wouldn't quit would they? |
yes they can pant and rest in between labor pain... If the top comes up its still difficult to get in to help mom I sit on the floor in the whelping box, I would use the cage after the whelping is complete. Be sure and wrap the sides of the cage (blankets or towels) to assure no drafts can get in, you want to make it cozy and a place where she feels safe as well. please read the site I posted for you, it should answer many of your questions and explain what to expect. |
ok thank you for the info :) |
Hey the same thing happened with my pregnant yorkie this morning! Shes now shivering on and off every once in a while, and i think her water broke, because she had to relieve herself so i let her out and right away she squatted and went. I let her back in and i saw that she had gone ALOT! It wasnt yellow though it was clear, so i think her water broke, but does that happen with dogs? Shes resting alot, and i heard from another member that the same thing happened with her dog (the shivering thing) and she had puppies that afternoon!:animal36  |
I only have experience with cats but my cat Mittens water broke in the morning and by that evening she had kittens. |
