Question about Brooklyn Breeder? Hi everyone! Just wondering if anyone purchased their pup from Ivan at S&V Quality Canines in Brooklyn..... (not a puppy mill!) Was wondering about your experiences.... Thanks! :D |
store Hi If it is pet shop and he is not a breeder, then where do the pups come from..?? 99% buy from brokers, who in turn buy from commercial and bulk breeders...most will would term them a "puppymiller". If he says he buys from reputable breeders, that is a contradiction in terms. Reputable breeders did not sell to brokers or pet shops. If there is nothing to hide as to where the pups come from, ask to see the registration papers and contact the breeder..all info, name of breeder and address is on AKC papers, not sure about other types of registries...JMO. Also, ask for a vet reference and speak to the vet, ask if he/she would recommend clients to this person..ask a vet tech if they would buy a puppy from them? |
Thanks! Pat: Wow, you are good! I may have misled you -- because S&V are the breeders.... I was just curious as to how I would be able to tell if they were good. I mean, I felt comfortable, I had recommendations, the place was spotless and the puppies looked healthy.... I was just hoping maybe someone else knew of this place..... and I could get some opinions.... I appreciate your help!! |
Lol What threw me off is the name...do they have a web site? After you have been on this or any other Yorkie forum for a bit you will see why we can be leery? If they have a one year genetic guarantee, good vet references, loved the pups and their home was a good environmentto breed/raise pups, parents available...I would be happy to know more , people ask for pups in NY area on this forum sometimes. |
Agreed. I am from NYC as well... I am currently searching for a reputable breeder to adopt my first Yorkie. I am not enarmored with buying in NYC because the prices here are just crazy. I would look outside of the City... That being said, if they are reputable and have good quality pets that's a good start! There is not enough information available on NYC area 'breeders'. |
after thought The word "canines" is what I am curious about..most Yorkie lovers/breeders do not call them "canines"..also, how many different breeds of canines do they have and breed? One or two breeds or many? I used to breed Doxie's and Yorkies..not together of course. I found it very difficult to devote myself 100% to each breed..50/50 didn't work for me..but I am a slow learner! LOL If you have several kennel helpers, then they can do the work, grooming, feeding, keeping kennel clean, yard cleaning, exercising, socializing, vet visits, health records, AKC records, DNA records, shots/rabies/worming up to date, wash bedding, pens, dishes, toys, on and on, then you can do the fun part...go to shows (how do you know if you have good dogs unless you compare and compete) meet fanciers, learn, talk dogs, read, JOIN FORUMS,..how breeders can breed quality pups who own 4, 8, 10 different breeds is a mystery to me. |
Same here. It seems a lot of NYC 'breeders' seem to have Shih Tzsu's, yorkies, Maltese, and sometimes Westies... This is rather curious considering the space required to provide these pups with good a good place to grow up. This is why I am looking around the area. I would actually go down to Delaware and Maryland to find a good breeder for my future Yorkie baby... That's why I am searching even that far (to no avail to this point...) Right now, my best hopes are more than a few hours away. |
I thought I found a good breeder in MD, but after reading up on the CKC, I am a bit taken back by them... :( |
S&v Hi, I am in the market for a dog also and I alos came acorss S&V and I wanted to know what your experiece was with them. Thanks! |
Quality Canines I use to rave about Ivan and Quality Canine ... but I was sadly mistaken. Let me tell you my story and hopefully it will help you make your decision. I bought 3 dogs from Quality Canine: 1. Codie, a male Maltese 2. Katie, a female Yorkie 3. Tia, a female Yorkie ALL three have had health problems. Codie had severe luxated patella in his rear left leg at a little over 1 year old and Ivan REFUSED to pay for anything or even help. Codie had to have surgery. Also, Codie has very poor gums (they sometimes bleed when he eats hard food). Katie (rest in peace my little angel) was diagnosed with SEVERE kidney disease. She only lived a little over 1 year. :( Tia had a bad case of coccidia and almost died the first night I brought her home. In addition to my dogs, my friend Fran bought her Yorkie, Sammi, from Ivan. Sammi had an extreme case of liver failure. Sadly, she did not make it -- she was only 2 years old. RIP little Sammi. I would NEVER recommend anyone buy from Quality Canine again. I am so sorry that I ever recommended them in the first place. :thumbdown Please think twice before buying your baby there. I wish you the best of luck in your search for a baby. |
I forgot to add 1 more thing ... Ivan DOES get his dogs from puppy mills. Fran'd dog Sammi (RIP) came from MISSOURI (the puppy mill capital)!!! Also, Ivan can get ANY dog you want in a matter of 1-2 weeks!! He sells almost every breed raning from small to large dogs. He mostly has Yorkies and Maltese in his store because they're the most popular but just ask him about another breed and he will guarantee you that he can get it very fast. |
Thans for your quick and thorough reply. I'm sorry to hear about your doggies. Just to make sure we're talking about the same place - S&V Quality Pups on Brooklyn? I'm actually thinking about buying a Shih Tzu.. Can you recommend a goos breeder in the tri-state area? I went to Amerivan Kennels on 62nd and Lex and they claim they buy the dogs from a breeder...their prices were fairly expensive. thanks again! |
