Full grown size I was wondering when a yorkie quits growing? My sweet baby girl is 11 1/2 months old, and I'm Guessing about 8 pounds. Of course, the breeder told me she would be around 4 pounds when grown. I saw the mom, and she was about 3 1/2-4 pounds. I didn't see the site, but obviously, he was larger. Anyway, I was wondering how long she Will keep growing Thanks for any info Cindid |
My yorkie stopped growing by 10 months. I believe yours would be fully grown by now based on everything I have learned. My vet said some yorkies gain weight after spaying (mine didn't though). |
Some pups stop growing by the time they are a year old and some will grow and fill out until they are 2 years old or older. How old was she when you got here and how much did she weigh then? A good rule of thumb for estimating weight it to double their weight at 12 weeks and you will get a good idea of their adult size but that does not always work out. Just because a pup has small parents does not guarantee that they will be small. |
adult size Thank you so much for the replies. I think she is full grown by now. I got her when she was 9 weeks. She weighed 1lb 6oz. Of course, I love her no matter her weight. It's just that I am 69 years old and have MS. So, she will be harder for me to bathe, etc if she gets much bigger. She goes to the groomer every 5 weeks, but usually gets a bath in between. It seems that to get a really small pup (5 pounds or under) you must pay at least $1200. I don't have that kind of money. I paid $500 for her. Anyway, thank you for your input :) |

Anyway, I would like to welcome you to YorkieTalk and I hope you have many happy, loving years with your little girl. |
I got Buddybear at 14 weeks and he weighed about 4#. I just weighed him at the pet store on that huge flat scale and he weighed 8# 2oz. He will be 2 years old this July. |
Weight of a baby has everything to do with the dogs BEHIND the parents for generations....my precious little 2.5# BOSS bred with a female that weighed right at 5#....the smallest baby from that litter when grown, weighed 4.5 lbs....the rest weighed between 5-7 lbs. I have a male that I was so excited about...he is a Parquin and is stunning....I was grooming him to show.....until he blew right past the weight limit for the show ring....that cow weighs 12 lbs! I bred him to a female I have that throws small yorkies....out of 5 babies, 3 of them grew like wild weeds, reaching 11lbs, 12 lbs, and the COW I kept, 15 lbs!!! The other two in that litter hit just over 5 lbs. You have to look long and hard BEHIND the parents for at least 6-8 generations, to accurately even begin to guess what a litter will weigh, and you can still get green weenie surprises in a litter. Likewise, I have males and females that throw gorgeous babies that I am confident what they will weigh, or at least an accurate range, and that has to do with what is behind those dogs, in their pedigrees. Some are very dependable, some are an occasional crap shoot, as far as possibly larger adults thrown....I will occasionally breed those because they make great dogs for kid families....but HEALTHY is imperative in all of them, and they are that!! |
I also tell buyers my best guesstimate. |
weight Thanks everybody. As i stated before, I wouldn't mind the weight so much if I didn't have M.S. We have an 18 pound poodle, and I just can't do some things, like bathe her easily. So, I was hoping this one would stay small. Oh well, it is what it is. Was really wondering if she will stop growing soon. She will be 1 yr in a couple of weeks:animal-pa |
As someone else mentioned, they usually stop growing at around 1 year old. But, they may fill out in the next year. This is precisely what happened with Scottie who is now 2 years old - his size stayed the same but he filled out and is much more sturdier now at about 5.5lbs. |
My yorkie was around 10 lb when we adopted him, around 1.5 years old. He's now 2.5 and weighs 12 lb ... Doc says he's fine, I'd like to keep him around 10, but either way, he's my baby. ... He fits well with our family and loves to play with his 100+ lb big sister! If he was a tiny fella, he probably wouldn't be able to play rough with her like he does. |
