Heat Cycle Question.. I have never had an unsprayed female before and have no idea what to look for. For most/all of you here it's not rocket science, but, I just got her from a breeder on an adoption contract to have her spayed when I can. I do not know the warning signs even though I have been told about behavior changes. I have not had her long so I am still getting use to her personality, therefore, knowing if there are changes is obsolete. Plus she is in a new environment getting use to things. She is older and I was told to see if her vulva is swollen. I do not know if the current size of her vulva is normal for her or if, in fact, she might be going into heat. Help is appreciated. |
Acouple of questions t o ask your breeder a_ when was her last heat cycle and b) how often does she cycle? Ask her what her usual behaviour is when she does come into heat. Spaying if possible is probably good to do especially if her last heat was at least six wks ago from the date you got her. It is hard to tell in toy breeds when they come into heat especially if you are new to the breed and or never had another intact female of any breed Excessive licking of their rear area - discharge - swollen vulva are all signs. Behaviour changes can run the gambit from being more clingey or affectionate to more aloof.... I can tell you that vulva changes are quite apparent but usually after they have been in heat a bit. But without a known baseline it is hard to describe to you. |

Her litter was born in the middle of November (therefore, making her last heat in September) and guessing that her next heat should be soon. This dog came to her already pregnant so knowing how often she cycles or her behaviours are unknown. If it would help, I can take a photo of her vulva and post? I know, it sounds funny but it is what it is. Let me know. |
My little Patches has only just turned 6 months and in heat now and the first thing I saw was her bleeding and it was not something you could miss she is also my first female and for her she did get more clingey and affectionate to an extreme of wanted me to hold her for long hours of the day then her 2nd week she was so swollen and we are now into her 3rd week and she is humping everything in sight so these are the things I have learned in the last 3 weeks I am waiting it out to find out if she will be a 21 day or 28 day cycle. Outside of buying the cover-ups the same day I was not prepared I was under the impression from the breeder that it should have been close to 1 year before she even had a heat cycle, but I figured it out why she started so early is because we have no other girls in our home she is it so she is on her own with no one to follow suit with. |
