Importance of keeping pups with mom til 12 weeks old? I'm not a breeder but am curious as to why it's important to keep pups with their mom til 12 weeks old verses 6, 8 or 10. I am getting a new pup and she was born on January 7th. Of course I want her now but don't worry...I know I have to wait. Mom is now trying to wean her pups . I've heard they learn socialization skills but what else? |
If you have found a breeder that wants to keep her babies until 12 weeks old, you have someone that knows something about what is important and what they are doing. Everything that makes a well socialized puppy, is taught by that mother to her babies, from 8 weeks until 14 weeks old....how to submit with respect, to others, how to play appropriately, how to best deal with emotional trauma and separation, how to face challenges from others, how to be brave, how to be appropriately curious, how to be confident, the list just goes on and on! Everything that well adjusted, well socialized, even tempered, confident dogs will be as an adult, is taught by momma during this period of time... |
Thank you Judy! All makes sense! I had never heard of this until after I joined YT. I never knew all the reasons why and now that I'm getting another pup I thought I'd just ask. Hannah was 8 weeks old when I purchased her. Maybe that's why she's so bossy?? |

It is very important they stay. Now, staying with mom is not a cure all. But some behaviors are subverted by staying with mommy. It's super important and it makes your life easier and helps you have a better dog- for the life of the dog! |
I'm getting the pup as a gift from my soon to be DIL. She's not selling her pups. I doubt she knows all the reasons why they should stay with mom for at least 12 weeks but I could be wrong. I mentioned it to her shortly before they were born even though I didn't know all the reasons. There is a litter of 3 and she is keeping the other 2. Never to breed again. Of course I have no problem waiting as far as the pup is concerned. I have been in contact with her daily concerning the pups and am getting photos and videos almost every day. My pup is the runt. She is half the size of her siblings but is the first to do everything. The pups are in good health and my future DIL is doing a great job caring for them and mom. I wouldn't even consider getting her until 2 weeks after she has completed her shots which would be 9 weeks anyway. I can wait 3 weeks longer as hard as that will be. I am extremely excited! She is learning her name which is Dominique Faith Evans. I am learning about her by watching and studying her videos. I can't wait to touch her! Thanks for enlightening me! |

Which behaviors? Any other that Yorkiemom1 didn't mention. I am curious. Not new to dogs, I've had them all of my life. Many different breeds. I got my MinPin at 5 weeks old because her mother was bit by a rattlesnake. She's a great dog. I have rescues with no issues at all and I have no idea when they were separated from their moms. I could probably search this on the net but I wanted to hear it from people I trust here on YT. |
Biting can be one. Manners to other dogs is a huge one. Momma tells them when to bite less hard during play, scolds them for humping and testing boundaries overly much, etc. |

Thank you for your input!! |
Three of my darling dogs were obtained prior to 12 weeks old. They went to obedience classes and have wonderful personalities. I don't think there is that much of a difference personally. I want my puppies young, so I can train them how I want to. |
Although I am an advocate of 12 weeks, there are so many factors that I believe influence when is the best time to bring home a Yorkie puppy. For a first time Yorkie parent, I believe it is often better to wait until 12 weeks when the puppy is a little less 'fragile.' The benefits of socialization and maybe some potty training usually come from good breeders. Not all breeders are good about working with their puppies. My 2nd Yorkie Teddy stayed with his breeder 8 months. I often joke that I would do that again in the future because he was so well trained. :D I know a bunch of Yorkies who went to their homes at 8 weeks and they had no problems. Their pet parents are good trainers and know essential care for little ones. When I brought home Max at 13 weeks, I had no idea what I was doing. I'm lucky that he had a good start with the breeder, he was a sturdy 3 pounder, and he is innately a very good boy. |
Thank you all for your input. Her mother is a very well behaved quite little girl and I'm hoping that Dominique will be too. I'm sure she will learn a little from my other dogs in time. Hannah is very vocal so I'm hoping she doesn't have much influence on Dominique. I will be visiting her in a few weeks and can't wait. I was wrong on her birthday...she was born on January 13th. |
