Confused! The vet that I have used for many years retired and sold his office. He was always a great help when we were expecting to whelp a litter. But, he has retired and the new owner seems to have some different philosophies regarding care of the bitch and weaning her pups. Years ago my old vet taught me how to use goats milk to mix with puppy dry food to make a mixture for the babies. He also said it was okay for me to allow the bitch to consume the milk product as well, while she was nursing. Now my new vet says No! No goats milk unless I'm replacing milk for an ill or neglected pup! He says absolutely no goats milk for the bitch! My bitch is due to whelp within the next 12-24 hrs (her temp is 98.6) but I would like to know what's best for the bitch and her pups. Why no goats milk replacement formula? The vet says consuming the goats milk causes an over abundance of calcium and it causes the puppy to stop producing its own calcium. |
Oh Gwen, I have no clue, so sorry. But I know we have experienced breeders to help and I hope they see your post Soon!!! Is it the old vs the new theory from the vet schools? Wow I would be burning up the internet on this question. Best wishes, Please post pics of the babies when you can. |
The have milk formula ESPECIALLY formulated for puppies and nursing mommas....why are you falling back on goats milk when there is specifically such a thing as "Just Born" enfant milk? It is complete, balanced and if you need to feed babies because momma cant/wont, you mix up that totally complete formula I have posted numerous times on here, and you wont lose your babies if there is a nursing/nutritional issue. As babies are weaned, you mix that puppy formula, Just Born, into their mush and they are getting everything they are supposed to be getting, in the correct amount..... |
How are you doing? Did you have puppies. I'm down in Redlands if you need help. Text me at 951-313-4559. |
Yorkiemom1: The formula that I use is made for infants. It does contain goats milk and I purchase it at PetSmart. It comes in a powder and can be used for feeding or weaning. It does the same thing as what you're stating. Scrapindee: Thanks for extending the offer of assistance! I live in East Highlands Ranch which as you know is just about 3 miles from Redlands. It's so good to meet someone near by! I'm always looking to become more knowledgeable by networking with other Yorkie Lovers. My Sace hasn't whelped yet (sigh)! Today was day 63 and she is enormous! I've taken note of your phone number and I would love to contact you after her litter has arrived! My name is Gwen |
Scrapindee: I'm impatiently waiting for my bitch to whelp! I can't stand the suspense. We're on day 64 (I recalculated her due date). She looks like a huge balloon that is ready to pop! I called my vet this morning because I was concerned that her temperature has been down since Friday but he says don't panic, just remain calm. So I'm trying not to be such a worried mom but I can't help it! We're expecting 5 or 6 little ones. I'll keep you posted.:( |
