preemie puppy with green stool 4 Attachment(s) I have a litter that was born on 12.13.15 about 5days earlier than expected due date. 2 girls and 2 boys. Everyone seemed fine except one tiny girl(less than 2oz )which looked very dehydrated and with hairless hind toes. She couldn't latch, so I tube fed her first 4 days and 1/2 tube feeding + 1/2 mommy for following week. Esbilac and just born formula was way too strong for her to digest. 1 part goat milk , 1/2 water, 1/2 pedialyte with karo and nurtidrop was just perfect for her little tummy. She's been on 100% mommy's milk for about a week now, and slowly gaining weight(now almost 3.5oz) she's been eliminating stool every 3~4 feedings, and color and consistency of stool was perfect, except starting yesterday color of stool has changed to dark green(normal consistency) I'm just wondering if she's over eating and can't digest the milk well.(I reduced her feeding to every 3~4hrs) Other than color of her stool, she's doing great. I'm taking her to the vet on Saturday, but I'd love to get some thoughts from knowledgeable ladies of YT. She was checked by emergency vet from Animal Medical Center which is considered the best animal hospital in the city, and the vet made a huge mistake and almost killed her, so I'd love to get some input from experienced ladies here before I meet with vet(Sorry to say this, but many of ladies here are more knowledgeable than many young vets out there!) PS: Anyone know vet who's experienced with newborn in NYC area? thank you |
OH how precious!!!!!! I don't know about puppies but baby people poo is often greenish the first weeks in a newborns life. Best wishes for your litter of babies. |
Could be all the food changes. But how absolutely adorable. Hope she makes it such a little fighter...Lynn |
I've read that human babies can have green stool, when they drink too much of diluted mommy's milk. However, in puppies supposedly, they can have green stool, when they can't digest milk(too rich) properly... I was wondering about the food changes as well, but she's been on 100% mommy's milk for about a week now, so why now? ER DR. told me that she won't last more than couple of days, but she has been proving her wrong. She's such a fighter, but I'm still very nervous about any little changes she makes.... By the way "HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!" :D |
Is the food high in iron? Not sure about dogs, but I know that can cause green stools in humans. I am not a breeder, but her weight gain must be really encouraging. |
I don't know, since I haven't tested mom's milk... other litter mate(boy who was about the same weight as her, but not preemie) is doing fine, so I'm guessing she being about 1.5 week preemie could be the reason for her not being able to digest the milk properly... I'm just hoping its not infection issue... |
Just came back from "Hudson animal hospital", and Dr. Angiello was very nice and caring. He was amazed(his words) that not only she survived, but also she's thriving! We both agreed that as long as her stool is normal consistency, we'd just wait and watch... (I might give her probiocin to balance her flora) I've been praying for this little girl everyday, and hope god will help her to grow healthy.:hands: |
that is so cute! Good luck with that tiny baby...look at that worried mom! |
1 Attachment(s) Thank you! so far, she's doing great (She gained .75oz since doctor's visit which is the most weight she ever gained in such short time) She's still 4.25oz, and her balance is not there yet, but can't complain considering how she was 3weeks ago. |
What a sweet picture. |
1 Attachment(s) thank you just want to share one more picture of her with her little friend who keeps her warm at night:) |
Great job keeping her going! She looks so tiny and precious... Looking forward to updates! |
This is exciting she is improving. Slow and steady growth sounds fabulous!!!!! Congratulations and I hope the rest of the litter is making great progress. |
