kennel license Right now I have two female and one male Yorkie that we are breeding. Both are (hopefully expecting their first litters). We breed one of our females to a different stud dog in hopes to get a female that we can retain to eventually breed to our male. My question is this: at what point do you need a kennel license? What are the requirements for one, and how do you go about getting one? |
depends on your state and county laws. Here in Portland Oregon the law was 4 dogs max per household, 4 years ago (I believe) it was overturned now there is no limit in multnomah county. I know in Vancouver Washington within the city limits allow only 3 without a kennel license. Some cities and or counties require a kennel license but you must reside in the right zoning. I would google your city and county ASPCA you can usually find regulations on their site. hope this helps |
Here in Oklahoma, my vet said you can have 3 females & 1 male & still be considered a "hobby breeder", meaning you don't have to be registered. |
Check with your local zoning ordinace enforcement. They can give all that good information that you need to be in compliance. |
As far as federal regulations are concerned, your question timely as there is current legislation proposed which is very controversial on this issue. Here is a link to learn more. http://www.tica.org/legislative/legpaws.htm |
laws When you call you county for regulations, I would not offer any information as to how many you have or hope to ever have..I have had friends who moved because the county found out they had too many Yorkies...and in many places FOUR is too many! |
Thanks for your in put. Our "city" (all four hundred of us) or our county doesn't have any regulations concerning kennels. I was warndering about the federal regulations. Thanks for your help. |

This is a great link- it really shows you in black and white the impact that this change in the law will have on the small show/hobby/fancier in not just our breed but for everyone cat breeders, rabbit and guinea pig breeders and etc.. This law has done nothing but make it easier for puppymills and commercial breeders to flourish and with the governments pat on the back. They really had some good lobyist to promote this bill to our lawmakers. |

Every state and town is different. Punch a search into google using: Dog law (and then list your state) Then what you need to do if it says different towns have different numbers allowed is contact your local town manager or whoever governs your local town. Where I am there is NO limit on persoanl dogs per household and yet right down the street where the township changes it is 2. But that is only Personal dogs. New pups do not count until they reach a certain age. I believe 3months alot of places. Anyways. Just punch in dog law and also can try" kennel license your state "and see what it says. My state you have to actually not only HAVE but SELL over ... um... i think 26 dogs a year to be considered that you have to have a kennel license. Now retail establishments have to always have a kennel license but not the hobby breeders unless they go over the limit of sales. Hope you unserstood all that :p |
The kicker with the new law is also adds if you gross $500.00- 26 puppies-and or adults and breed more then 6 litters and if you sell them. |
the "paws" bill really upsets me and has ever since i first read about it some time ago. does anyone know when this bill may be going before the panel again? i have read all the sites i can find and i dont see anything set in stone at this time? north carolina has also proposed some very strict dog laws. nothing has been accomplished so far, but i do live in fear that it could. I mean really, what would I do if these laws were put into affect? i could not get rid of my yorkies! they'd have to haul me off to jail, then i'd still fight them. and no way could i put my babies in a facility!! this is the most ridiculous thing i've ever heard of! don't they realize that if they forced me to do such a thing that they would be turning me into my own worst nightmare?? |
