Question About Protein % I have a question for breeders. There have been a lot of new foods on the market with very high protein. Innova Evo for example has a guaranteed analysis of a crude protein minimum of 42.0%. That just seems too high to me for a Yorkie, what do you breeders think? Thanks. Sheila |
I'm not a breeder but what I started doing is just putting about 1 tablespoon of the EVO in with the Canidae. I'm curious also what the breeders will say. |
Not a breeder also , but my yorkies were on innova and had to switch down because it was too high in protein, we are on Cal. Natural, it actually is a bit higher in protein like 2% BUT it has less ingredients and is a much simpler formula that he can digest. :) |
Cindy, What symptoms of too much protein did you notice on Innova? Sheila |
don't get me wrong it is a AWESOME food, but my Gizmo (6mo, 3 lbs) has a very sensitive tummy and it made his stool too rich and runny , so I consulted with all of my vets(paranoid mummy) and called Natura customer service for their opinion as well and looked up on the site tool for "what type of food is best for your dog" and even consulted the natural health store owner and worker and I decided to move him to a less complex diet. think about it , when our little one's get sick they almost always suggest chicken & Rice for a couple of days... well their new food from the same line of Natura "California Natural Chicken & Rice Puppy food" has a very well put together diet. Natura makes 3 different styles of food: 1. Innova Evo, Puppy, lamb, etc 2. California Natural ,Chicken & ricepup/adult, lamb & rice etc. 3. Healthwise etc.... It is just different price ranges, for different budgets and tummys, being that Innova is the most expensive about $15.99 for a 6lb bag, but one of mine just didn't agree w/ the food so we switched lower and it is working so far! Hope I answered your Q's sorry for the rambling.!! :) |
Cindy, That makes sense; that the Innova was just too complex for Gizmo's sensitive tummy. Thanks for the explanation. Sheila |
I'm not a breeder but I'd like their opinion too. Kip has to stay on 26% protein maximum by my vets advice. She also has a sensitive stomach and will get diarrhea and vomit if she eats foods too high in protein. |
Trish, I was in Barnes and Noble yesterday, and looked through about 6 different Yorkie books, and the majority recommended not more than 22% protein for an adult Yorkie. I suspect too much protein makes the kidneys work harder. Sheila |
That would most definitely leave out the Innova EVO then because it's about 42%. |
