Labor Hello my Yorkie is about 2 months pregnant, I checked her temp at 7pm because she started panting and it was 98.9. It is now 5am and she just been laying around and still panting but no contraction or pushing yet. Is this normal? How long before she would start having contractions or does this sound like a problem? Thanks |
Hello, welcome to YorkieTalk. What day is it from her first breeding and last breeding? Most females can go into labor anywhere from day 59 through day 63. Some can go sooner but if the mom has her puppies before day 58 they might not make it. Some females will have panting spells a few days before having their pups so panting does not always mean they are going into labor. Sometime they will run a low temperature if they have not eaten and their blood sugar goes low. If she is in labor you would start seeing contractions after several hours of panting and she would start doing a lot of digging as the labor progresses. How big is your female? Please keep us updated on how she is doing. |
Hello and thanks for your responds. We got her from a Breeder and he offered me his pick of the litter and for half price if I was willing to breed her back to him and give him 2 puppies. She is 18 months old and a tad under 5lbs. She was breed on March 31 which would make this her 58 day but he always told me they may have gotten bred early because he would let them out together in the pen but the only time he saw them stuck was the 31st. There have been no contractions or pushing yet just heaving panting over the night which has now stopped but her temp is still at 98. |
Is your breeder around to mentor you? You really need to be asking them all these questions. Hopefully they are experienced in whelping and will be able to help you. Breeding a female under 5 lbs can be risky. Do you have a vet on call in case she runs into problems? Do you know how many pups she is going to have? Does your breeder have more than one male? You said your breeder wanted you to breed her back to him, do you mean her sire or a different male? Personally I think it is irresponsible for the breeder to just let the male and female together unsupervised. It could of been dangerous for both male and female. Do you know what day of her heat cycle she was on when they were seen tied? Also it seems like you are paying a big price for your female considering you are taking all the risks and giving up two pups. Do you have a contract with the sire owner? What if your girl only has two pups, what then. Hopefully everything will work out for you. Please keep us posted on how things go. |
I talked to the breeder and vet this morning they both said it seemed normal and she should be having them in the next 24 hours. They can just have a bunch of panting but not to worry unless she has contractions and no puppy I was just asking on here because it was 3am and I also want to get others opinions. He said they were tied on the 31st which would have been her 16th of heat and I dropped her off on her 10th day. Which is why I think they could have been tied before the 31st and he just didn't see it. He has 3 sire and she was not breed back to her dad who he said is his main sire. We did sign a contract and he said he would give me her papers and officially be mine when I gave him the pups and he would only take 1 if she had 2 and if there was only one I choose to keep it and breed again next year or just give it to him. Didn't seem like a bad deal and thought it would be cool for my kids to experience but last night was more worrying then I thought it would be... Also I have read the c-sections can need to be done as where he said it possible but he never had to had one done in his years of breeding. |
I am glad you are in contact with your vet and your breeder. It is possible that the pups were dropping and getting in position. It could still be a couple of day. You cannot rely on just the low temperature. Just make sure you watch her closely and don't leave her alone for very long. Once the pups start coming I recommend you be right there to help break the sack and cut the cord otherwise you risk the momma accidentally hurting the pup. |
Ok thanks for replying and for all you help. |
How is she doing? Has she had her pups? I pray all is well. |
Hello sorry I haven't gotten back with an update have been busy with the pups but yes she had 4 healthy pups they are doing great so far. Thanks for all your help. |
Congratulations on your new litter. I am glad all went well. I hope you can post pictures of mom and her babies . |
Labor My Yorkie, Is having contractions...she has been pushing a bit on and off all day...Is this normal?? |
No, not normal, not good....if a female is in active labor and if the person with the bitch is inexperienced, and if the bitch has been in a non productive active labor for more than 2-3 hours, she needs to be seen by a vet.....you can easily loose the puppies, loose the momma, or loose the entire shooting match. Praying for your momma and her babies..... |
Update??? |
I am sure hoping for an update too but since the above post was the members first post, if she has posted a reply I know it will need to be approved by a moderator. I hope the pup made it to a vet and that all is well.... |
I hope everything worked out for this little mama... |
