Ok ---

I wanted to keep Lissie's thread ontopic and the congratulatory thread just that.

As a potential breeder, I have a question and this may help Lissie as well.

Lil' Bit's 6 pup litter is pretty big (to me at least).

Since the litter is so large, should she supplement the babies at all?

Someone suggested supplementing mom with calcium and I'm sure that is to be sure she doesn't get eclampsia as we've witnessed recently with Gracie.

What should a breeder be watchful for after having a dam whelp such a large litter?

Thanks in advance to all of our resident breeders.

This isn't meant to be a theory question but one of information for Lissie and others who are in their learning stage before breeding their first litter.

I too had a litter of 6 early last year. (and it blew my mind that there were THAT many in there!) all were a good size, and all lived and did good. I really didnt do anything different than with any other litter. It all went really smooth from start to finish.

Thanks Carters Mom! I'm also wondering...should I take the pups with me to the vet when I take Lil Bit in the morning for her check up?? I'm going to ask him also about vitamin drops or anything else the pups should take.

Supplement mom with calcium and also make sure she's getting lots of liquids...goats milk, chicken boiled and deboned. Also, cottage cheese.

I would supplement the pups a little to give mom a break. Some bitches can handle larger litters without any problems. Some may need a little help. I wouldn't risk with a large litter since I've dealt with eclampsia, I know what can happen to a bitch that isn't getting enough or the pups are taking too much.

But, Calcium is a #1 priority.

on larger litters you worry how much the pups are taking from moms calicum. As Kim said supplimenting with calicum every day twice a day with tums depending on her weight (my girls average 5.5lbs they get 1/2 tab morning and 1/2 at night) is a neccessity. Also really follow her food intake if she is not eating on her own within 48 hours syringe feed the mom as much as you can get down her. If you have to do this I use baby rice cerel, goats milk and chicken baby food mixture.
