I would like to become a Yorkie Breeder.
I appreciate any comments and suggestions.
What's important and how do I start.

This is such a huge question - for what-ever breed you would like to breed.


I think the first question you ask yourself is why do I want to breed xxxxx dog. What are your goals with respect to your breed. Will you breed to the standard?


You need to know how to breed healthy dogs that are very good representatives of the breed - with Yorkies - temperament - coat - color - structure,


You need to know the pedigree lineage of the line you want to breed and its specific health issues.


You need to know at least the 10 top health concerns of Yorkies and do the health screenings before breeding for these specific concerns.


You need to know about the specific and general health issues with pregnant females and whelping.


You need to know how to rear well adjusted puppies. And to find good responsible homes for all.


You need to have a purchase contract in place and a health warranty for your buyers.

This is exactly what I was going to say......WHY do you honestly want to be a breeder?

I did a lot of research. We already have a Parti Yorkie. We have a very big house and about 12 acres of land. Me and my husband work at home. We also have a vet in the family. I would like to breed Parti Yorkies.

I am having a hard time finding any adult Parti Yorkies that are for sale. Does anyone know id there is a specific online community to find Parti Yorkies for breeding?

Look up Marsha at Yourshire Terrier Club of Ethical Hobby Breeders (YTCEHB). Some members are good friends of mine, experienced and very knowledgeable about Parti Yorkies. As a Parti color Yorkie enthusiast, be prepared for lots of fuss and controversy. To tackle this problem, you should have very thick skin and more money than God. Sincere best wishes.:)

Get very informed about the pedigrees behind the dogs you are selecting for breeding pairs. There is a whole lot more to breeding than just putting any two dogs together...you must be aware of specific genetic anomalies or issues a particular dog/line may have, because if you breed two dogs that are carriers of a genetic issue, you are going to produce a problem! You will want a pedigree that goes back at least 12 generations...that will keep you out of most trouble.....

Most ethical, reputable breeders are very careful and selective about selling GOOD breeding dogs...they have worked very hard to develop a line of HEALTHY dogs and they will not just let breeders go to people they do not know are devoted to preserving the line and the health of the dogs they breed and the litters they produce.

Before you go out looking for dogs to buy, the preliminary work involved in much more involved. You need to get familiar around dog shows, you need to know breed standard and conformation, you need a mentor (you have a vet in the family, are they familiar with reproduction/whelping?)to help you with whelping, etc.... There is a ton of work that goes into this breeding thing....and dont expect to make any money doing this, because if you do it correctly, you will do very well to break even!

Judy she is breeding Partis! Or wants to breed Partis. I do hope that website will give her all the information and help she needs.

Am I allowed to post pictures of the dogs that I am considering to buy or is that against the rules? I would like to get some comments and opinions on them.

I think you would be much better served presenting the pedigrees and the histories of the line of dogs you are thinking of buying, to professionals. You need an honest, critique of the dog you are looking at....take the dog to a dog show and let some of those people tell you what they see in your dog. Being "cute" or "pretty" is NOT a benchmark that a reputable breeder relies on, to base their entire breeding program! You do not see the breeding behind dogs in pictures...you do not see what is going on inside that dog's liver, heart, kidneys, eyes.....

What do the pedigrees of the dogs you are looking to breed, reflect? Are you going back and looking at dogs 9-12 generations behind the breeders you are looking at? What is the HEALTH history of these dogs and litters produced..... Are the dogs AKC registered?

I feel in my heart you may be putting the cart before the horse in this adventure you are planning. Under the very best of circumstances, breeding is costly, both financially and emotionally, and unbelieveably labor intensive......you work continously with diets and meds and exercise and activities to keep your dogs in the very best of their breeding capabilities and potential.

I do have a lot of money so that's not a problem.
I also do have a lot of time :)

I got copies of the pedigrees but I don't know how to do any research on this.
The AKC website shows a pedigrees with links to click for explanations but the links don't work :(

I am not sure why it seems that everyone here sounds like its the worst idea in the world to breed Parti Yorkshire Terrier.

Is there something I should know maybe?

I don't want to breed show dogs or super tiny purse dogs.
I just enjoy caring for the one we already have and I would like to breed a few for friends and family and whoever might want one.

You need to go to some experienced Parti breeders to learn how and why they were accepted by the AKC as pure bred Yorkshire Terriers. It's quite interesting and confusing. I am not a Parti breeder but some of my friends are. I'm trying to be neutral on the subject, but my nature draws me to the underdog. Most serious Yorkshire Terrier fanciers have a scary and severe hatred of the Parti colored Yorkie and will do all they can to discredit you for breeding them.
Pedigree research is complicated and much information is passed down by word-of-mouth, regardless of the coloring issues. Make friends in the Yorkie world, get to know people, find a great veterinarian, act responsibly and be prepared to pay out lots of money for good dogs and to settle up when things go wrong. Some of us do this for love of the breed and never because we need income from it.:)

The heallh databases - please note relatively few Yorkshire Terriers have posted health results.


You can inquiry by registered name of dog or kennel name or registered AKC number.


Any breeder worth their salt should be able to give you a seven generation pedigree.


Be aware that LP is very very common in this breed - LCP is on the rise - LS and MVD are also quite concerning


Be aware of the pre breeding health screenings that should be done.


AKC has always been quite helpful when I call to find out some pedigree lineage


Be aware of where the Partis are shown - because they can not show at AKC other clubs such as UKC (I think) might allow them into their rings.


And try to find the most seasoned 20yrs or so knowledgeable Parti breeder to help you sort through the pedigrees.


Seek out a reproduction specialist American College of Theriogenologists and get your gal examined by a specialist and testing done to see if she is healthy enough to be bred.


You need the whelping history of all females back in your line - the further back you can go the better. Free whelping vs C sections - litter survival rates. Litter sizes


The pre breeding screening tests could cost you easily $1000 can be done cheaper if you go to a health clinic run at a dog show. Eyes are quite common sometimes heart and ears are held too.


Finally in terms of pics - I would like better to see a video of each dog pefereablu on either loose lead or free moving as well as suspended stack shots - free stacking / no hard stack

Well de facto if you breed Partis you are not breeding to the YTCA standard nor will you be able to show in the AKC rings.


To breed without understanding all the ramifications of said breeding is to say the least short-sighted. You first and foremost are putting your gal at risk and for what? For friends n family they can get their dog from a professional breeder.


Please don't do this unknowingly and breed unhealthy dogs into this breed - we already have enough BYBERS who never did the specific breed health testings - never had their dog evaluated as to breed worthiness and we are rife with Yorkies with health issues - temperament issues - improper coat n color - alleries and simply dogs that don't look like a pure bred Yorkie. Tan n Blue silky coat etc etc

i am a breeder and i think you should stick with breeding to standerd breeding out of the breed standerd's is wrong there are to many badly breed yorkies already

I suggest you bring your female Yorkies to the veterinarian before breeding. Yorkshire or Yorkies can have some breeding difficulties. And of course, you have to be dedicated and really serious about it!

There is much controversy re partis.

Be honest, why do you want to deliberately breed for off colors.

Pretty much sums it up in a nut shell......This is NOT something you do on a whim.....you want to get to establish a kindred spirit among show people and Yorkie breeders....and you will need to devote easily 5 years going full time to shows, every show you possibly can work in during every week, meeting people that KNOW what they are doing, know what they are saying, that are devoted to the breed. I personally can not imagine doing this "just to get a couple of litters for friends or family"....the cost is way to dear.....you put your breeding female's life in danger with every litter.....is that something you are comfortable doing, just to provide a cousin a puppy??? The money and time and effort it should be costing YOU in this adventure, is no compensation for the dangers and risks you are putting your mommas and the resulting offspring in. And then in spite of all the research and study and learning, you put two dogs together that you know forward and backward for AT LEAST 12 generations, and WHAM! YOU end up with a genetic abnormality.....you are now responsible for that baby....even after you sell that baby and the issue does not show up for several years.....and remember, you continue to breed that pair for those several years, and producing issues that YOU need to accept financial responsibility for every single sick/deformed/afflicted baby you produce....good thing you have all that money, because you make NONE breeding, and you go through your little nest egg set aside for your breeding business, even with no issues or problems with your own breeding stock......

You really need to reassess exactly WHY you think this is a path you want to go down.....and know before you even start, if you do this correctly, for the love and improvement of the breed, producing the best babies you can possibly put on the ground/show ring, you will never "make any money" doing it.....break even is a wonderful alternative.

You want to be absolutely knowledgable about the lines and the breeders and how you are going to get your hands on championed, well established breeding dogs from legitimate breeder/showers.....you are easily looking at spending anywhere from $4000.00 and up for established, winning show dogs that are the very best of the lines they reflect. You will need to become well known around show people and the breeders, so they trust you and will even communicate with you. This can take years....but you need this in order to be a success in this adventure....and this is just the beginning. Classes on breeding and animal husbandry, and all this BEFORE you put your first two dogs together.

I forgot to suggest you start with purchasing a wide variety of vet books....Major's Book Store here in Houston Medical Center, has millions of medical books, both human medicine as well as vet medicine.....all the professionals in the Medical Center go here for our books. Start yourself a well rounded medical library of vet books.....this will set you back several thousand dollars just to get you started with a couple of basic medical/vet books.....fortunately, you said money was not an issue. You can get books on anatomy, books on surgical procedures, medical approaches to different conditions and diseases, pharmaceutical books, surgical books....all on vet medicine. I think you can order all your books from Major's on line now....this is a great place to start!
