Diet after puppies Our girl delivered her babies on Monday, since that time she will not eat her kibble. We feed our dogs Blue Buffalo Widerness Chicken and we have regular and puppy food available. She will not eat this and it's the only food she has ever eaten. We are making burger or chicken and rice for her which she will willingly eat, we mix in the Kibble and she just works around it? Any ideas on how to get her to start eating her kibble would be greatly appreciated. |
Personally I would not change her diet up to much. It is not unusual for new mommas to start being picky after having pups. Have you tried soaking her food in warm water? I know it sounds crazy but I often have to hand feed my mommas after they have a litter. Some I have hand feed some for 5 or 6 weeks. It is strange how they will eat so good if I sit with them and hand them a bite of food at a time but if I just put their food plate on the floor they ignore. it. I don't mind doing it since I think they really enjoy the special attention. You might try just soaking her kibble and adding a little canned food or scrambled eggs or boiled chicken and rice. Then just offer her the food a bite at a time. Just make sure she is not running a temperature. Most like she is just wanting to be spoiled since she is eating the home cooked food. |
I have soaked it in warm water and she refused it, tried hand feeding because she loved that as a puppy but she just spits it back out. I also tried crushing the Kibble and mixing it with burger and rice and she refused the entire meal. |
How many pups is she nursing? She needs to eat about 4 good meals a day. Is her temperature normal? Do you have any Nutri-cal to give her. Sometimes a little Nutri-cal will stimulate their appetite. |
She has two pups, she is eating fine...just not her kibble! We are making burger and rice and chicken and rice for her which she is eating. I want her to also eat her kibble (puppy food) and she refuses to eat it. |
Okay, I understand what you are saying. Her diet would be more balanced if she was eating the kibble. Try grinding the kibble in a blender until it is really fine then mix it with her other food. |
Great idea, I'll try that when I make her next meal. Thanks for the tip, I was running out of things to try. |
There is also a "whelping pudding" as well as a formula that can be given during whelping and then another mixture while mom is nursing the litter.....thanks to Mary Mardelin of Mardelin Yorkshire Terriers....mine love it and during the time when it seems their appetite wanes and waxes, they have alway enjoyed this mixture for me.... |
