chocolate yorkie?
 

i've been looking around at colors of yorkies and noticed a chocolate yorkie. i have a friend that told me that chocolate yorkies is a bad ressesive gene and not to consider getting one. what does everyone else think or know about the chocolate yorkies? :confused:

From what I understand, only the 'blue born' pups inherit more health issues, but not the chocolates and platinums.

THATS GOOD BECAUSE I THINK THE CHOCOLATES ARE VERY CUTE.. :thumbup: I'D LIKE TO HAVE ONE, ONE OF THESE DAYS :)

Hi! I surf ALOT of Yorkie sites...I like to see what people have for sale and the prices...(Although I would never buy any animal off line without seeing their living conditions and the parents or, at least the mother). I have seen a couple of "chocolate" yorkies for sale. The price was high as they were being sold as "rare". I have NEVER heard of a chocolate yorkie. So......I e-mailed AKC and asked them about this..They said this color is not recognized by the AKC. Also to beware of breeders trying to sell this color as being rare. This would be considered a defect in the color...I am not saying you shouldn't get one just becareful of breeders trying to sell you a "rare" color pup for $$$$ when it really isn't rare at all.

Teresa...whispersmom on here knows a lot about chocolates as she used to own one (may still) and she knows what it is that AKC says about them.

I have a gold and white parti-colored yorkie and they do register them AKC if both parents were AKC. I thought it was the same for the chocolates.

They are not common and are usually a little more in price but they are beautiful as all yorkies are.

You may want to do a search or even PM Whispersmom as she is very nice and knowledgeable. :)

You are doing the right thing, learning all you can before you jump in. IMO they are like a lot of other confusing features that some yorkies are born with. Whether is is rare and therefore expensive OR if it is a defect that one should avoid is all up to who you are talking to. If it is a Yorkie you are after and you want to play it safe you should take the advice of the YTCA. website is www.ytca.org go to the FAQ section and read about off colored Yorkies.

If I wanted a chocolate, or a parti, or a tri, or a Biewer, or a babydoll face or a tiny I would learn all that I could and proceed with caution. And if I felt fine with it, I would go for it.

Be sure this is what you want. Look at adult pictures of them. Are you going to be able to handle it whenever someone asks you what kind of dog you have? It may not bother you but we have a lot of posters who have non standard Yorkies and get really offended when someone asks.

How do you register the parti, tri or chocolate color? It isn't a color choice on the form I have for Shelby. (been slow to send it in) the choices are black & tan, blue & gold, blue & tan, and black &gold.

One of the reasons Princess Chai's breeder registers her parti-colors with APRI instead of AKC is because AKC registered them as a traditional color until just recently so it was hard to track the pedigrees and actual colors of these special dogs. With APRI they have always put the correct colors in the record so the pedigrees are accurate. I know that AKC allows you to put the correct color now but I have not seen the form that is used or how they do it.

There is no evidence that parti-colored or chocolate yorkies have any more health issues than traditional colored yorkies...purists simply do not like them because they are not within the standard. Breeders used to use the health issue excuse as a reason to kill these beautiful babies at birth so they wouldn't "ruin" the breed. It is simply a matter of esthetics and not a reason to kill a perfectly sweet and healthy puppy imo, despite the "breed standard".

The fact is that the yorkie was developed from combining terriers of different colors and (some believe) the maltese, which means that those recesssive genes for all of those colors are there in the genes of some breeding yorkies and they pop up occasionally. This is how the Biewer Yorkie was developed. Mr. Biewer decided these dogs were beautiful and worth saving so instead of killing them he started breeding "for" them and now we have the tri-colored Biewers. :)

although they are beautiful little yorkies, i think i'm going to stay away from them. if i bought one, i couldn't breed it because i don't want to hurt the yorkie breed.everyone has good points and i thank you all but i guess i'll stay with the black and tan. everyone has been so helpful. sending me links and giving me the best info they could. thanks a bunch everyone :)

I have a chocolate (see avatar), but he's just a pet to me at this point. He just weighs a little over 1 pound and a half @ 6 months of age! Lemme show you an updated photo.

your chocolate yorkie is adorable. i really would like to have a chocolate yorkie. do you think it's ok to breed the chocolates? are you going to use him for a stud? i'm still alittle confused but he is so precious. i'm in tn but i have family in pikeville, lexington , louisville and i think cynthianna. i'd like to see more chocolates in person if you know someone that breeds them. thanks a bunch :)

He is so cute, I love his nose..it looks like a Hersheys Kiss!!! :p

I have a choc. male Yorkie who is a funny little guy. He may or may not be used as stud...I had a lovely little male who was destined to be used as stud-again only if I had decided he would be what I wanted to breed. He descended one testicle so I gave him to a family as a pet. He has been neutered and is king of the roost. I think I have a pic of him from his family at Christmas time. I will have V. post it if I do.
I also have a parti marked male that has sired a litter with my Biewer female and the puppies are gorgeous. They will not be registered, as the only registry that would register them is one (maybe two) that I have cosen to not deal with. Remi is reg with AKC as a black and tan-those are the COLORS that form his markings. Parti is not a color but markings. The term infers that the base coat is white as per the informant at AKC with marking of other colors-two makes a tri-color and it seems most of the partis are colored that way. He was bred with a standard color female who carried the piebald gene and the puppies are standard colors. There are no guarantees when dealing with the genes related to color and pattern I am afraid.
There are examples of Biewers, parti, and my beloved Jesse in my album and the avatar that V. posted for me. My Biewer females have both been bred to Cruiser, a Biewer and all are registered in Germany.
I also know a bit about blues. The call that is mentioned in the article noted on the post might have been my original call to the breeder about a blue puppy that I had taken and placed as a rescue.

As far as I know - there are no known special health issues with Chocolates but that isn't true for what they call a "Blue Born"....The Blues have health problems and those are the ones to stay away from.

Aw, he is very handsome!!! I want one..I like their nose!

I've watched this little guy sort of grow up thru pictures - he's just beautiful and changed alot since a baby :)
