Is this normal? My Sugar doesen't stay with her pups. She is on her third litter and when they get 4 weeks old she hardly ever gets into the box. They seem to be healthy and she does stay with them a little more at night. I keep them beside my bed. My other yorkie Princess stayed with her babies till they where weaned.Sugar has two beautiful little girls and I sure would hate it if they wasn't getting enough care from her. Any advise would be greatly appreciated. I did have to clean one of the little girls buts this morning. She doesen't seem to be taking care of that anymore either. Having to change their bed daily. |
ditto, my cocker spaniel had 6 and the mom seems not to be that interested in them anymore????? She only wants to feed MAYBE once aday.... I give them puppy milk with dry kibble and also canned food to get them used to it, they are 4 weeks old today..... I would also be interested in some info like is it bad if they are completely weaned off at 4 weeks thet eat the canned food and mixes I make them fine , they don't have teeth yet though????? |
This sounds like one of my girls. When 4 weeks hits...she is tired of them! (2 litters under her belt has proven this to me, hee hee) I would suggest in-closing her in a small ex-pen with them for nursing. That's what i've had to do. Some moms are great in the beginning then they just tire of them really fast. It doesnt mean they are a bad mommy, I'm not really sure what it means... But I have been in your shoes and putting them in a small area with her at different times of the day is a good way to ensure they get to nurse. Have you ever noticed when pups get around the 4 wk. point they will actually stand under mom and nurse? If she is in-closed with them, she doesnt have much of a choice other than to let them...Hope this helps. If not, maybe there is someone else who has a different outlook/idea. best wishes, |

Another Yorkie gal just recently completed her duty....she slept with her baby for 4 1/2 months...she demanded to sleep with him up until the day he left. Literally threw barking fits to get into his pen...there was no peace. And another gal. Well she doesn't want to sleep with them past 6 or 7 weeks...but she nurses and cleans their butts for MONTHS. LOL My tiny female was highly insulted that mom was still flipping her over at one year of age...to clean her tush and butt! LOL They are all different. |
 yes, my cocker spaniel pups literally stand under her and walk with her while nursing, but she DOES not want to be with them, I enclosed them in the bathroom so they can keep warm and she can nurse without any distractions but she just cries and cries wanting out! I don't know if it is okay to COMPLETLY wean them off of her at 4 weeks any ideas? |

So you are saying it is okay for them to be weaned off at 4 weeks? I mean if mom won't feed?????? What does the toe nails have to do with it, i think I know but I better ask just in case? |

Thanks for the toenail trimming advice. Got that done.:) They will be 4 weeks old on the 17th. I tried a little ground up puppy food and they just made a mess and licked it a little. |
Chrystel, my Biewer mom, tried to turn her letter of resignation as mom at 2 weeks. I gave it right back to her and said "Nope, you get 'em til they are four weeks-THEN and ONLY then, will I take over. Think she listened? Not on your life. I had to coat their hineys with NutriStat and hold er til they latched on. Come 4 weeks and so long, sayonara, I'm outta here. And you bet she loves THIER little bodies when they are covered with Esbilac, kibble and whatever else I put in there. But, pooping THOSE? I think not. Skylar has 2 that are 5 weeks old and she has now resigned but cannot wait to get in the elevated pen when she thinks food is in there and at night. Yes, they are spoiled brats. And, we wonder why they don't listen to us. They don't have to!!!!!!! LOL |
Yes indeed Sugar is spoiled rotten. They turned 4 weeks this week and i hold her down a couple of times a day so they can nurse. They are eating science diet sm bites puppy food ground up in a mixer. It is messy but it works and Sugar eats her share too.Same food as hers but i guess it taste better ground up. She is back in the bed with me now too. She started off being the best mommy. Like a kid getting tired of a new toy. |
