Need advise about my pregnant Yorkie I hope someone can ease my mind. I'm not a breeder, but a Yorkie Lover. My Yorkie is very pregnant. She's petit & weighs 6 lbs when not preg. She's had two litters in the past (4 pups each) with no problem. My concern is....she is Much larger this pregnancy, Huge! She couldn't get herself back up the stairs this evening. When she rolled onto her back, she couldn't turn herself back over. I don't know if this means she's having a big litter, big puppies or what. I plan to take her to the vet tomorrow, but now I'm worried that she'll go in labor tonight and that something will go wrong. I'm not sure what to look for if she starts having problems. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I should watch out for???? |
I am not of much help in this field but of you are in fear. I would visit emergency vets and just take her in to have and x-ray or ultrasound to see how many puppies and the position. Remember if you wait to long you run the risk of loosing her and that would just be devastating. :thumbup: |

When was she bred and when is she due? I usually go to my vet for an x-ray 1 week before her 1st expected date of whelping. If she is in active labor for more than 45 minutes, I would at least put a call into the vet. If you see a black or green discharge, this means at least one of the placentas has separted from the wall of the womb...in this case RUN to the vet. She's due anytime now. No signs of active labor yet. No signs of discharge. YAY.I am definitely taking her in to the Vets office in the morning when they open. And hoping labor doesn't start tonight. She ate well this evening. She just seems tired, and having a hard time getting comfortable w/ her huge belly. I'm not even sure that she could reach herself down there to do what she needs to do for the pup at birth. I will update on her as soon as I know more. Thank you so much for responding. |

Hi, No. I've misplaced the themometer. Can't find it anywhere. :( It's 1:30 a.m. here. She's very restless acting. It's hard for me to tell, but I think she's starting labor. She's not having the hard, pushing contractions yet. Just a little whiny, restless, sleep a bit, then restless again. I can't remember how long this part last before she's ready to push. |

Update: Just brought her back home from the vet. She has at least 6 puppies, possibly a 7th. :eek: Her temp is 101 and I'm to keep check to see it drop under 100, then she should have them soon. Besides being Big and uncomfortable, she's healthy. :) This is nerve racking! lol. |
Lissie, take a deep breath, sit down, relax. Hug your baby. Then go on back to worrying, like all of us do!! (Not much help, I know, but at least you know we are all in the same boat as you when our babies are hurt or pg or whatever might come up.) Hope she has the puppies soon and you get to stop worrying. |

definition of a breeder; any person that breeders two animals successfully resulting in a litter, that being said, this thread validates the reason all pet owners should spay and neuter, plain and simple, unprepared! |

She has at least 6 pups, maybe 7. Thats why she is so big. She is very healthy. I just never expected such a big litter from a Yorkie, thats where most of my concern comes from. I have my Vets number on speed-dial and the Emergency Vets number also, in case she has any problems in the overnight hours. My Vet is 5 min. from home. The Emergency Vets office is about 20 min. away. I feel a lot calmer now since talking to the Vet. He's given me several things to watch for, and I have a new themometer to keep check on her temp. Again, Thank you, and Thank You to the others that have offered advise or support. :) |

Lissie: I'm glad your worst fears did not come true last night and that was for her to go into labor before you could get to the vet. I think, by reading your posts above, that you have taken the steps you need to for the future. I truly hope this delivery goes as smoothly as possible and that when its all said and done, you can sit back, relax, and enjoy the love of 6 or 7 brand spanking new yorkies until it is time for them to go to their forever homes. Best of Luck to you and your mama! I always think it is better to have 6 or 7 (yikes) smaller puppies than 3 or 4 HUGE ones!!! Please keep us updated and best of luck to you...we ALL worry about our mommies and their babies.... |
With so many puppies, there are possibilities for many problems. The size you are describing would make me worry about a ruptured uterus if she doesn't just push them out with ease. Any trouble at all (I am assuming you know the troubles so I won't get into that) and you must beat feet to the vet with your girl. Has the emergency vet ever seen her? Just curious but it would be good if you had met them.. You would be more comfortable. I so hope that you will put off any further breeding til you have become a well-educated BREEDER. I am not saying you are not an educated PERSON, so please don't be offended by that. But, I am sure you are uneasy enough already to know this is not an easy process. And, for what it's worth, We all will be worrying with you because we breed and love the breed and want what is best for each and every mom and puppy. So, know that you have a lot of people pulling for your girl... |

She has a new thread . . . Lil' Bit whelped six pups - 3 boys and 3 girls!!!! Delivery went well today. Mom is going to the vet tomorrow for a checkup. |
