Buyer be aware of (Cindy Newhook- Pixie Dust Yorkies- Calgary, Alberta, Canada) Hi I am posting this on behalf of my senior mother who is not into using computers. Although we would like to remain anonymous we thought it would be best to share our experience. My mother doesn't want another family with a broken heart like herself. We are not one to post negativity about others but my motheris deeply saddened about her loss. Her 2 year old yorkie has just passed away from LIVER SHUNT (as diagnosed by our vet). Although this was not my mothers first dog, this was her first yorkie. We were under the assumption that these little dogs are supposed to live a good 12-15 years? My mother purchased her pup from CINDY NEWHOOK (PIXIEDUST YORKIES). Cindy is located in our city Calgary, Alberta, Canada. We originally found Cindy through her website http://myyorkiebabies.com and she goes by her CKC kennel name PIXIE DUST YORKIES. Because my mother’s little one was already 2 years old we are no longer covered under her 1 year genetic health warranty (as stated on her website). I am also in shock to see that her puppy prices have gone up $2500-$5000 each. My mother did NOT pay that price two years ago. Has puppy prices gone up everywhere? This should be a big red flag to grab your wallet and run! We are not expecting anything in return. But wanted to warn others- BUYER BE AWARE! My mother would never purchase a pup from this individual again. A breeder can be wonderful and all that but one must question her breeding practices as no puppy should be dead at 2 years of age. My mother would like another yorkie in the future but right now she is very distraught by her loss. |
You should still get ahold of the breeder she needs to know so she doesnt breed that breeding pair again and have someone else goe through this |

I am so sorry for your Mothers loss, how devastating for her. I do so hope that the breeder is aware of a diagnosed liver shunt, even if it is outside of her health guarantee. The University of Tennessee - and Dr K Tobias is an acknowledged expert on Liver shunts and much information can be found there. You can find out about the inheritance pattern of Liver Shunts, and what research is on-going to find the genetic markers for this thought to be a recessive and (maybe) polygenetic condition. It is quite possible that 2 clear dogs can produce a puppy with Liver shunt. And if this is the case with your Mom's puppy the breeder really needs to know this, as this pair should never be bred together again. You can send a copy of the necropsy aka autopsy report to the breeder that clearly shows the COD as an un-treated Extra Hepatic liver shunt. If a necropsy was not done, the scintography report, or the ultrasound, the BATS testing and other blood testing that at the minimum points to Liver Shunt. Once again my condolences to your Mom on her loss. |

This is not education! Its misleading information. These are the consequences of not knowing the history of our breed. Its too sad to see that these people call themselves "breeders". Its too sad to read that "Parti Yorkies ARE RARE, they are hard to find and as supply and demand goes, they do cost more than the traditional colored Yorkie." This is not breeding. Its just a supply to an unhealthy demand. |
I took everyone's advice and contacted Cindy which did NOT go well at all. She was very hostile an demanded I keep this hush. Makes one wonder what this woman truly is about? More angry now |

I don't blame you for being angry. You did the right thing by contacting this breeder. Unless you signed a confidentiality agreement with your sales contract, you are under no obligation to keep this hush. You could post the registered names of the parents that produced a Liver shunt puppy. They should be clearly identified on your Canadian Kennel Club Registration paperwork. I am so sorry that you experienced hostility instead of sympathy, that the breeder did not ask clarification questions to ascertain certainty of diagnosis, that she did not support you and your Mom on your loss. If you feel after review of the Code of Practice for CKC member breeders that she has breached her responsibilities you can report her to the CKC. Code of Practice for CKC Member Breeders | CKC |

I'm so sorry for you and mom, how very sad. The reality is the majority of breeders of Yorkies, Parti's, Biewers are NOT ethical breeders, they are looking for the $$$ There are some great breeders out there, in the future educate yourself, and choose wisely. Learn the redflags and stay away...there is a ton of info here for you to read through and it will help you in the future. Again welcome to YT, I'm sorry its like this but thank you for sharing the information and helping a future Yorkie momma. Keep us posted and stay awhile! |
I am so very sorry your mom lost her two year old precious baby. The breeder's response to your call speaks volumes about how much she cares. This is so sad. |

I have friends who breed Partis, very nice people breeding good dogs responsbly. I don't get what they're doing wrong. Mike, please open a discussion about this. :) |
I agree.. I also do not understand why Mike's post would be considered "Great". I read the link and I did not see anything in it that was incorrect. Sue knows quite a bit about the Parti yorkie, and she did a fairly good job explaining it. This thread however is not about the Parti yorkie debate so I apologies and don't want to stray off of the original topic. Diana:animal-pa |
