Just an informational question Is it more likely that a maiden bitch carrying a litter of 4 will whelp her litter 5 days early or 5 days late? |
I don't know the answer to this but wanted to bump this for you. Do you have a breeder mentor who can help you as well? |
Being a maiden bitch would have nothing to do with it. It depends on when during her heat cycle she was first bred and when her eggs are released to be fertilized. I have had maiden females go anywhere from day 58 through day 67. Male sperm can live up to a week in a female after she has been bred so unless you had the vet run a test to see if the female was ready for breeding prior to breeding her there is really no way of knowing for sure when she takes. |
My litter already whelped successfully producing 4 beautiful pups. This question was asked because of a discussion that I had with someone who didn't think it was possible for a bitch to whelp late. My answer to her was there's no way to be certain when the babies will come. Bitches can whelp prior to their due date or several days after. Her argument was that bitches are never late! Since she wouldn't listen to me, I recommended she be prepared prior to the due date just in case. |
Then number of days is in correlation to progesterone levels and ovulation. The only way to know when a female will whelp is by doing progesterone testing on her. Otherwise it's all just a guessing game. |
