Size of female champions Curious. What size (let's call it weight) are the females you show? and win with? Once they become Champions, would you breed them? (seems like obviously you would but.... I am a little confused by this b/c the show I went to it seemed like many of the females were smaller. Like 4 or 4.5 lbs. (I got to pick up 2 of them after they showed and I even asked their weight b/c they seemed so light) Once they are Champions, do you fatten them up to the 5lbs. so they are a safer weight to breed? when I was searching for a pup I didn't call Newspaper Ads, only talked to serious breeders. It sure seems like I remember a 4.5 weight for Mom? |
size It depends on a few things..one being the part of the country you show. Some areas the Yorkiew run smaller in the ring. Here in Florida, they like small..but I see Maria Cordona (Parkside) bring 6/7 pounders at least...and she wins. You really see all sizes, but I agree I have seen a smaller Yorkie lately as oppose to a few years ago. My champion bitch was not small..Katherine was 8 pounds on a 7 pound frame. Once she retired and had puppies, she got to 9 pounds and i had to watch what she ate..he was so fat. Judges rarely pay attention to weight..they look at the frame...unless teh dog is obviously over or undersized. There really is not reason to finish a dog or bitch unless you plan on breeding it IMO..that is the reason the English started dog showing. |
Yes, I thought it would seem a little stange to go through everything to earn the Champion title and not pass on the good genes ;) Like I said, some of those females were pretty darn small. Thank you for the response. |
Size I have personally noticed this past fall while showing one of my boys that the judges liked smaller yorkies, more around the 4 lb range.. Especially in the dog classes.. They liked more of the cobby (shortback) body, not alot of leg and neck neither.. All my males are square, but they are not tiny.. They all have noticeable leg and neck.. Melanie |
for what its worth, the show here in oregon November 2005 there was a tiny boy (adorable BTW) entered he didnt stand a chance, the judge didnt look twice at him. |
Heidi is 5 pounds 12 ounces . Ashley is 6 pounds . |
