Are false pregnancies typical? Are false pregnancies a typical occurrence in Yorkies or in unspayed females, in general? I've been hearing more and more people say that their female has had a false pregnancy but up until a few years ago I'd never even heard of it. I'm asking mostly out of curiosity (I have male dogs,) so thanks in advance! |
I've had one true false pregnancy years and years ago. She went through labor, and actually delivered the water bags of phantom babies. Although I knew she wasn't bred, since she was contained and no male exposure at all. It was a crazy experience which I felt bad that she went through a mourning period since she had all that work and pain of labor and had not produced babies. Mostly females are hormonal and may just produce milk, or stay swollen. I don't think it is anymore typical in a Yorkie as with any other breed. |
Oh your poor baby! :( |
I personally have never had a false pregnancy, but my friend's Yorkie did and like the above poster she actually went into labor pains, but didn't deliver anything. Another friend had a poodle and her false labor was more the typical just experiencing weight gain and treating a few toys like they were her babies. I do not believe that false pregnancies are more common in Yorkies or in the present time it is just that owners are more knowledgeable to recognize them now. |
