Black and Tan as Adults? Hi everyone, new YT member here so I apologize if this isn't the best place to ask this question. I've learned so much from reading threads for the past few weeks, and thank y'all for your time and information! We are shopping for our first fur baby together, and have really fallen in love with the idea of our baby growing up and keeping darker colors. The biggest challenge we've had with this specific search is trying to avoid the puppy mill/designer breeders. Does anybody have any suggestions for the Georgia area or the southeast? Any information is greatly appreciated! (and thanks in advance!) |
Gold and silver are the breed standard. Be careful looking for anything else. I got what is know as a 'cotton coat' (by accident) and she is the same colors now as she was when she was a puppy, but beware, it is also the same texture, soft and fluffy and mats up quicker than you could imagine! There is a cost for certain looks, be sure to do your research. |
Thank you! We're willing to wait for the right dog and willing to put in the extra time if we can find one that fits. We are definitely conscious of staying within the breed standard. I think specifically if we can find very little steel- that'd be ideal. |
I got my Ripley at TyAva Yorkies in Marietta. Very please with them. |
Teh breed standard is dark steel blue and tan or gold furnishings with no running gold into the dark steel blue saddle. No breeder can guarantee a coat colour on a puppy as that colour can change up to 3 years of age. Colour or size of parents still does not guarantee colour or size of puppy at maturity. If you are seeing a puppy at 3 or 4 months of age and it is already going light in colour, no doubt it will be a light coloured yorkie. As most are sold before this age anyway, you won't know for sure unless you find an older one. One that is breaking colour at 6 or 7 months likely will be too light by 3 years of age. Cotton coat also does not guarantee black and tan. I have one that is my pet and is silver and light gold furnishings now almost 13 years old. She started going light in colour at 18 months. Surprised me no end when that happened. At one time years ago, breeders kept the cotton coat thinking it would keep darker coats in their line. As these cotton coats matured and some did turn light in colour breeders realized that didn't work as they thought. To keep darker colour in your line, using correct colour for breeding purposes especially in the males who throw more puppies in their reproductive career than females is definitely the way to go although don't forget your bitches in your breeding program. |
Our Kyra is almost 3 now and has kept her dark color but she does have what I call a modified coat that does mat if not cared for twice daily by brushing her out completely. Even then we get tangles. Her mother was the same coloring as her but not sure that is why she stayed like she is. |
