What are some good conforming characteristics? 1 Attachment(s) I'm new to Yorkies and dog showing, but I would to try it if I thought there was a good chance. My little buddy is AKC. Does having parti yorkie in his history along with white accents disqualify him? I've also struggled with his coat. I want it to get long, but it doesn't seem to grow. He's always been on a grain free diet and I exercise him regularly. Sometimes I think his ears are a little on the large side and could be more triangular, but then I'll see a champion yorkie with even bigger ears. Other than that, he's downright handsome (of course!) with good proportions (IMO). And a good portion of his family tree are all DNA tested AKC. |
It is good that you are interested in showing and learning about proper conformation. Where in Texas do you live? The best way to learn is to attend some dog shows and find a mentor that is knowledgeable about yorkies and showing. Your boy is handsome but as you realize it takes much more than that to make a show dog. Coat is very important. The only white that would be allowed would be a very small patch of white on the chest. Many pups are born with white on the chest but it usually fades away as the pup gets older. How old is your boy? From the picture it looks like his coat may not be silky and that could explain why you are having trouble getting any length to his coat. You would have to have someone familiar with yorkie coats to evaluate him. A silky coat is cool to touch and it reflects a lot of light. |
Where are you located? Parti Yorkies or having white markings is a disqualification. Yorkies are only blue/tan according to the standard. Any other color is a major fault and DQ in the AKc ring. If you are interested in showing in the future, you should start attending shows, talk to exhibitors, and start looking for a mentor/breeder that can help you to learn about the Yorkie standard and what makes a good representative of the breed. |
Good for you DFDUB for taking an interest in showing and asking good questions. You already got some great advice from some people on this site. I have been learning a lot. First of all, its not easy to show a yorkie, thats for sure. Its really fun, and working with your dog will only strengthen the bond you have. My advice would be if you do decide to show your buddy is have fun and don't worry to much about the outcome. Worry more about the process (coat care, socialization, and the skills you need to show your dog.) If you take care of the process, the results will come. Study the breed standard. Find a mentor. Take some comformation classes. Go to shows as much as you can. About Yorkies |
