2 litters at once
 
I have had a lot of great help from everyone regarding my two litters that my two yorkies had 1 week apart.

I just have another question. The pups are now 4 weeks and 5 weeks I have started some food with them and they are doing really well.

One of my mamas shows aggression to my other mama (seems like she thinks that she took her babies).

I'm wondering once the pups ween completely off the moms can I put the litters together? All the pups in one place? Right now I have them separated. It would just be easier if they were all together to feed, bathe and clean up after them in one area.

I would never mix litters together....if you make a mistake and get confused about one or more of the babies, what litter they belong to, you could possibly have an issue if you were to register the wrong puppy from the wrong litter, and for some reason, that pup was DNA'd........also, if one litter gets sick with something, you will cross contaminate both litters .....I always keep litters separate....

I have always mixed litters when they get older and I have never had any problems. For me it has always been easy to tell my puppies apart. You just need to make sure you can tell them apart. It does make it easier for cleaning and for playtime.

AKC would be extremely upset to hear of mixing litters without microchips! I would never in a million years mix litters together. A breeder in good standing with AKC is required to keep the records with parentage and since there could be a confusion by mixing litters, it wouldn't be fair to AKC or the new family if there was an accidental mix up.
I would also be concerned that your Moms have access to each other and/or puppies. You could have a terrible fight where a Mom or mistakenly a puppy gets injured or killed. It could and does happen! Keep them in separate rooms.

I remember years ago when I started breeding, I mixed two older litters in a playpen. These puppies had on little collars that clearly ID'd them....I thought my mentor was going to kill me! She is no nonsense and brutal, but she KNOWS her stuff and knows how to stress an important point!!! I fully expected to be struck dead by a lightening strike from above! She read me the riot act for a full 40 minutes, and finished by saying she hoped I did not tell anyone that I was putting different litters together, because, if reported to the AKC, that would get the AKC and God only knows who else, swarming all over my records and my home! The very least it could end up costing me was having all 4 breeding parents DNA'd, and all the puppies DNA'd to assure correct parentage....that is quite a bit of $$$$! Seems I remember reading someplace that mixing different litters together was not tolerated as far as what the AKC considers acceptable protocol. I would not encourage you to do this. Beyond this point, some mothers will kill babies if they smell another litter smell on their puppies....

Deb, I would never mix litters without knowing exactly which pups belonged to which parents. My first AKC inspection I had a mixed litter and they did not seem at all concerned. They did do dna testing on one litter and their parents since it was my first inspection and that turned out just fine. In fact I got complements on how everything was perfect.

At what age to you microchip your pups?

I microchip at 10 weeks. I'm surprised AKC didn't say anything. It's a very big no no.
I bought a male one time that didn't match his sire when I DNA'd him for breeding, and come to find out she "thought" she knew who was who when she mixed the litters up. It cost her suspension, and DNA for all her dogs. It was a nightmare because it took forever to get it straightened out and cost her a fortune, plus the embarrassment of suspension. I just wouldn't take the chance.

This is the picture my mentor painted for me! I never did that again! She stressed to me that the AKC does not care that YOU think you know who is who....they will make you DNA everyone remotely involved, plus all the babies......suspension, embarrassment, tons of money for all the DNA testing, etc.... It just isnt worth it for me.

Yes, I know you ladies are right. It could be a big embarrassment if it happened. Over the years I have heard of several breeders that had it happen to them. Believe me, I don't do it often and when I do I use extreme caution.

I need to clarify for those that are not knowledgeable about breeding. AKC does not require dogs to be microchipped but they must be at least have id collars or a tattoo. I use id collars and tattoos on my dogs so they are identifiable.

Here are AKC's rules and regulations for breeding dogs. Everyone should be familiar with them and keep good records.

I microchip my puppies at 9 weeks when they go for their first puppy shots.
