pregnant Hello, I am new to the group and I am the owner of a 1 year old yorkie. She's 41 days pregnant and I'm so excited. Can anyone tell me how soon it would be before she goes into labor? |

I would tamp down the excitement there is a whole lot then go wrong especially if you don't know what your doing. How much does she weigh? Have you gotten X-rays? Do you know an experienced breeder to help you whelp? Do you know all the signs do distress? What if mom rejects her pups are you prepared to feed them every 2 hours, keep them warm and clean them? Also if no genetic testing was done you could end up with pups that have genetic health issues. |
What part of tx are you in? I'm in fort hood. You may want to check out the breeders section but I think most deliver around day 65 roundabouts. I'm not a breeder but there are some very good one's here who have actually delivered a litter and can give you first-hand experience. Welcome to YT!!!! |

Before anyone can give you sommmeeee information would be to know how/why she is pregnant? How much did she weight before pregnancy? Did she have one heat or two heats before mating? Do you know the age, size, weight of the pup that impregnated her? Did you rescue this dog from????? Has she been vetted? Do you know anything about whelping at all? |

You have a very young female that is pregnant which is of concern. I do hope she has been to the vet and you are asking all these questions of your vet. Debbie Jensen has a good whelping breeding site. Just google her name and it should pop up for you. Females usually go into labour anywhere for 62=65+ days after breeding. You have much to prepare for the big day. Xrays are usually done after day 56 which should tell you the number of puppies expected, and the relative size of the puppies, and also give you a fair idea if a C section will be needed. I wish you good luck with the whelp. |
Thank you Gemy for your post to the person wanting to know when her dog might whelp. She was so happy and excited I think people could be a bit nicer replying. I understand where they are coming from but she asked a question and it should be answered. Better to try to help her with what is already done not scare her off. |

I did not tell anyone what to post. I prefer to answer questions and try to then help steer someone right. I myself bred and showed dachshunds Minis for over 30 years and we all start somewhere. The dog was already bred so I was not encouraging anyone to breed. I do see where they were coming from but that was not what she asked. I now have only pet yorkies 3-5lb. |

True but I felt like her at one time with my first litter and I remember how excited I was. That was a long time ago. |

Again, these questions are pertinent to giving the advice, would you really want to say "oh hey day 41? you only have 16 days to go" without knowing some of the facts? If this is a first time breeder and she has no idea what she is doing (which it appears is the case) and doesn't realize this pup needs care, professional care- not that she is just sitting at home waiting for the pup to go in to labor. What if she doesn't know if this pup was bred with a 15lb dog or a 2lb dog? What if her pup is too small to deliver safely? There can be some serious consequences to just answering in 10 days without asking pertinent questions. We've seen it here many times. To the OP there are several factors that are important to know before proceeding with whelping your pup. If your pup was bred to soon there could be complications, if your pup bred with a male that was bigger than her the chances of complications go up, if you have no experience, you would be wise to get a mentor quickly...many things can go wrong, you need to get to a vet and have this pup xrayed soon so you can prepare in the event a csection is necessary. Yorkiemom1 can give you some great information, I will send her to this thread. |

How your feeling is irrelevant to the pregnant pup's health and welfare. I'd hate to see this excited first time breeder presented with a pregnant pup in labor suffering complications because no one told her.....unfortunately, the world of breeding is not all about the excitement for the owner, its about the safety of the pups.......... |

I was replying to lovetodream.88 Do you all really have experience with whelping and all that goes into it or do you just jump on anyone who is new and says something you don't agree with? My point was talk to the person in a kind way and try to help and advise not chase them off the forum. Am I allowed to voice my opinion here or is it only for people who have been on here longer? Not trying to be rude but it seems some of you were to me. |
