What is in your Whelping kit? Amber is due Jan 25 with her first litter. I am trying to put together all the supplies that we are going to need for the big day. What are the things you have in your whelping kit? I have my list started with things that I still need to purchase. I just want to make sure I have everything and am not forgetting something. I would much rather have to much stuff than not enough. She is due to have her x-rays on Jan 17. That alone will prepare me to know how many pups to expect and if they are a good size for Amber. Where have you purchased your heating pad? Is there a certain brand or size I should get? Thanks |
How exciting! :) Let's see...whelping kits....cotton balls, alcohol, gloves, scissors, thread/wax-free floss, heating pad (got mine off of eBay...but any pad will do), lots of towels/paper towels, a puppy scale, iodine, a box with towels and heating pad turned on but underneath the box for pups, trashcan with trashbag...can't think of anything else... |
http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sho...965#post344965 to save me from typing it all over again..lol you can read this thread (link) above, it has good info... |
Alcohol, iodine, child's scissors, dental floss (plain), latex gloves, lots of towels...LOTS-and not any your fond of and want to keep, my notebook full of stuff (notes, printouts, vet numbers, etc), cotton balls, syringe & artificial milk just in case, garbage bag, some sort of timing device-watch, clock, something to read...or as it will be next time the PC and YT!, one of those snot suckers-sorry, don't know the real name mucus bulb or something? I never had a heating pad, I had an electic blanket that I put over the top of the box (it had a top on it). I never thought about putting one underneath duh! I left all of the stuff out about 1 1/2 weeks from her due date...didn't want myself or anyone else to have to go digging around in a panic. |
Thank you everyone for your reply. There was a few things that I have not thought about yet. Is this a heating pad I could use? Is it to big? The other thing that I am unsure of is it has auto shutoff thats not good right? If this is not a correct pad could someone post a link to something similar that I would need? Thanks. Heating pad: http://www.walmart.com/catalog/produ...30910868202498 Here is the scale I bought. I cant wait to get it! http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...MEWN%3AIT&rd=1 yorkiemom1970- thanks for the link. I actually found that post earlier on my research. I have it pasted in my Word Processor. I have been putting together my list since 9am (that does not include the list I already have started). I am becoming obbsessed and dont wont to forget something lol. There was great information there thanks! BamaFan121s- great idea about the notebook! Thanks! txshopper73- It was the simple things I forgot about like the trashbags. How could I forget that. Thanks! |
dont forget the mom, she needs to eat after whelping mosts moms are ravenous, a bowl of boiled chicken and rice, goats milk, and a small tiny serving of ice cream (they opt for the latter first) Oh and a bottle of brandy for you when finished:) good luck to you Kimberly |
Oh boy does the brandy sound good :D . But it will be a while before I can have anything close to that as I am pregnant to :). I will look forward to the day where I can have a drink again. Do you just boil the chicken? Should I grill it or fry it after? Is there a certain amount that should be given to her? Or should I just put the bowl out and take it away when she done? Thanks Quote:

boil then shred the chicken like you make chicken salad mix it with white rice and just a bit of chick broth, as far as the amounts as much as she will eat!! oh and the ice cream is vanilla but very little, my vet said to try it my last couple whelps and they loved it! Kimberly |
I will be pretty busy I also have a toddler that will turn 2 in March. But thats ok I love it! Amber is the lucky one who will get to go first. I still have to wait until March. Hopefully time will fly :). Amber is gonna love her chicken meal. I cant wait to give it to her. Thanks |

b) plus, in the form used in first aid kits, it is so diluted that it is not harmful...granted, you wouldn't want to drink a bottle of it anymore than you'd want to drink peroxide or alcohol. In it's pure, undiluted form, it is harmful if inhaled over long periods of time. I.e. in an emergency situation, you can use iodine (or bleach) to purify water...bleach if you can boil it, iodine tablets if you can't |
