FAding puppy
 

Bumped into a young man who just had a litter of puppies Fri evening - 2 were delivered by C section (1) pup did not make it, there are 4 remaining puppies. I am sorry I can't remember the 3 barrel breed name - the mother is about 30 lbs.

Yes he has been to his vet.

I have emailed my breeder friends to see if they can help him out. I have sent him the whelping pudding recipe, the home-made milk replacer, he had been using esibilac, I have sent him the fading puppy recipe.

He has been to the vets twice already, and has been using a syringe to supplement feed - which the vet gave him the what for for using huh? THe vet has no knowledge of pups this young it seems.

He has rotated on the teats, and yes each one appears to be giving milk.

All the puppies won't stay latched on?? Unless they hold them in position.

The pups are being kept warm, the mother is caring for them, they are peeing and small pooing regularely.

I mentioned the fenugreek to him to help stimulate milk production. This is not her first litter. Second litter I believe.

I am not sure of weight gain/loss at this point in time.

Any ideas? How soon do you get the mom's milk analyzed? Also I am thinking 4 Cleft palates can that be right?

If puppy's start loosing weight he needs to start supplementing I would suggest tube feeding it's faster and the pups get more milk this way. The vet can teach especially if you suspect cleft pallet. Weigh the baby's 3-4 times a day with a food digital scale. My little girl gained so much weight with tube feeding. Her mom had a c section also.

Cant beat tube feeding......precise, accurate, controlled, safe, etc....

Thanks Judy I mentioned that to Jordan, but he said he mentioned that to his vet, and the vet is concerned with the increased risk of aspiration into the lungs.

But I also mentioned to him to call my breeder mentor, as she works with a repro vet in Aurora, that might be willing to train this young man in tube feeding.

But as an update despite emails to him and a phone call he has not returned anything.

WEll I did what I could and just hope that no news is good news.

The risk for aspiration into the lungs is about 3x's greater when feeding with a dropper or even bottle feeding puppies that are too weak to suck. That is the excuse all vets give....they do not want to assume the responsibility of teaching how to tube feed a new born puppy to a novice....if only people would actually do research on how to tube feed a puppy, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of tube feeding compared to bottle feeding and feeding with a dropper.....a pup with a compromised gag reflex will almost certainly aspirate with these other methods....

I don't particularly like tube feeding but sounds like he needs to learn. I don't think there is risk of aspirating at all. I used liver water with one of my pups….well now that I think back, the day before, I took him to the vet and they did sub q fluids and a drop of bethamethasone under the tongue. The vet told me it would make him feel happier. The next day I used the liver water and all of a sudden, it was like a switch was flipped. I'm not sure which it was that worked or a combination of all but this is a critical time. I'm thinking that another vet more familiar with newborns might be a good idea….. Good luck…will be hoping for a good outcome….
