When to breed? I'm sure we have a lot of lurkers out there that are thinking about breeding and may have a bitch about to come in season. I know some are overly anxious to breed the first cylce. I personally never breed before the 2nd heat cycle. Primarily because I want my bitch to be fully mature and physically devoloped. For the veteran breeders, do you prefer to wait for the 2nd heat? I've talked to some breeders that say they will breed a bigger bitch on her first heat if she's at least 12 months. What are the thoughts of our veteran breeders out there? Let's keep this as a discussion. No judgements to be passed. We all do what we feel comfortable doing... |
Bump! |
Wow Irene...you're just really on fire starting these threads here lately huh? Are you on a Dairy Queen high? ;) Anyway, me personally, never start on the first heat. We bred Trixie on her second, but then again, she didn't go into heat the first time until she was over a year old. I also don't breed 2 heats in a row. I know some breed 2, then skip one, I would prefer to skip...but that's just ME. |
Sound like it huh?..lolol.. I just thought these are important issues to discuss because there are a lot of first timers out there. Besides, I'm curious to hear others ways of doing things. I'm an open book with my breeding program. I see you are too. Which is great. Baffles me that other breeders I know of on this forum are not actively sharing info on this thread or others I've started. However, they seem to come a runnin' to certain posts.  Anyway, thanks for sharing. |

BUT I do prefer the 2nd or even the 3rd heat before breeding. And also I believe a bitch should be bred before the age of 3 the first time. |
My thoughts are that there have been so many put down for sharing their breeding practices lately, who would WANT to share anything...except us two boneheads I guess. :p Yes, it does seem that some here are more attracted to other posts. but that's another story altogether. |
cycles I perfer the second and even the third. Clemmie is being bred now and it is her 5th heat. LOL |

Is this Clemmie's 1st time being bred? Is there concern about her internal organs not being as 'pliable' as if she were younger? I've heard of that why I ask. (Nothing's set in stone as to what to do and what not to do, although we sometimes forget ;) ) |
Even if you aren't getting many responses, please don't stop posting these kinds of things! I am a breeder-wanna-be :p and am still doing my research and working with my wonderful mentor, but I log on here many times a day and watch for these kinds of things as I love to see the different ways that people go about doing things and try to soak up as much information as I possibly can. So, keep at it! :D  |

Clemmie Yes, it is her first breeding. She is 3 yrs and if she wasn't bred this time I was going to spay her..which would be a crying shame because of her pedigree. Every dog and bitch in her mothers pedigree are finished champions for 3 generations. Isabel Dare gets the credit for the pedigree, not me. She has been bred to a nice champion I am very fond of and if there is a problem she will be sectioned and spayed. |

Good luck to you and I hope she give you a future Champion! |
