Need some advice My teapot Lou Lou gave birth to a lovely 6.6oz girl Ebony yesterday....Very healthy pup... She fed from mum a couple of times...The baby was lying on a heat pad and started to cry...Lou looked at her a couple of times , then to my horror she snapped at her....of course we removed the baby from harms way.We tried letting her sniff the baby but she just tried to snap at the poor little lamb..Lou goes ballistic if the baby is crying. I have managed a few times to relax Lou with a belly massage which she loves , then put the pup on Mum to suckle, which she does not seem to mind, but as soon as the pup makes any noise she gets agitated again. one thing of note is that she had a very easy labour ( Lou is a 17lb teapot). The baby arrived not enclosed in its amniotic sac. Lou did not really pay much attention to her ie licking etc....We have been hand feeding the pup with attempts at putting pup on mum when we have her relaxed. I have also been expressing milk from mum to keep her supply going..... Is there anything else I can do to encourage the bond ?or have I a mum that has rejected her pup.. Any help would be appreciated. Shirl |

I am sorry to hear that Lou Lou is not caring for her pup. About all you can do it to continue what you are doing. Put the pup with the mom to nurse every couple of hours. It is very important that she gets momma's milk. Hopefully she will start taking care of her baby soon. How old is the momma? |
My princess snapped at her baby once but she was c section and rejecting the baby. I did supervised nursing and every time she did something I would say no no but she is vary obidient and listens well. You have to supervise the nursing and if she is not cleaning the baby you need to get a cotton ball with warm water and clean the baby so he can pee and poop at this age they are not able to do it on there own. I would sit in the living room watching tv and I had a small laundry basket right next to me on the couch watching her and baby's every move just a idea. |
consult your vet, you do not want to loose this sweet angel puppy |
1 Attachment(s) Lou Lou has just turned 3 this month. We have managed to get the pup to feed from mum the last 4 feeds. It takes two of us, one to position and pacify Lou with calming words and massage, the other latching pup onto mum and closely supervising. Any sign of Lou getting agitated we remove the pup for safety sake. We are having to potty the pup too. Had both Lou and Ebony at vets today...Gave Lou some just in case there were any retained products as we were expecting 2-3 pups. Her abdomen was palpated and no further pups were felt. Ebony was check also ...perfect. my vet said to continue what I am doing. One thing that helps is when Ebony cries we pick her up and let her suckle my finger..that kind of stops Lou getting so agitated which in turn allows me to calm her before putting Ebony on the nipple. She sure has a very strong sucking reflex. At the moment it would not be safe for me to put her beside Lou and supervise as I think she may still attack the pup. She seems to be a bit better with the pup this afternoon and I even managed to get pup suck on my finger , got Lou to lie down and let the pup suckle , although I still had to whisper sweet nothings in her ear to keep her stay calm. She is also allowing the pup to suckle for a lot longer...34 minutes. Hopefully we are turning a corner today and I don't feel as stressed as I did this morning. |
