Vaccination advice please? Hello, so today my Athena is 8 weeks old and next Tuesday she has her first vaccination appointment. I was told on another thread I should wait until she is 10 weeks old to start her Vaccinations, but I was told by the vet to bring her in now. thats why the appointment is next week. Also, Parvo is a concern here. We have a lot of problems with that here where I live. I keep her inside, but I do have other pets ( fully vaccinated ) that go outside and of course it could be brought in on shoes, or almost anything no matter how careful I am. Also my husband works with live pigs for smithfield where they slaughter for processing. not pleasant I know, but its a job. So I get concerned as to what he could bring home on his clothes etc. In any case. I told that I came to the breeder section that perhaps some of you could tell me when you vaccinate your pups and what you recommend I do? It I appreciate any advice given. Thanks. |
I follow Dr. Jean Dodds vaccination protocol. Here you go... Dr. Jean Dodds' Pet Health Resource Blog | 2013 and 2014 Canine Vaccination Protocol - W. Jean Dodds, DVM |

Your vet knows best go with his knowledge. I had a friend that had a orphan puppy and he was vaccinated at 6 weeks because he dirint get the colostrum. So it would not kill the immune. That's what the vet said. :animal36 |

Also I remember when I got my Shih Tzu puppy vaccinated, he got real sore from it. He cried when he move or we picked him up. the next time they gave him some pain meds for that. I was thinking I should ask about getting some in case we need it. I hate the thought of her being in pain all day if there is something we can do to help that. |
I vaccinate my puppies around 9 to 10 weeks. I give them distemper and parvo only. |
I start vaccinating with Vangard Plus 5, at 8 weeks old, and give a vaccination every three weeks until they are 14 weeks old. At 6-8 minths, they get rabies vaccine. If it is a large Yorkie, like 10+ LBS, I will give the rabies at 6 months....the smaller the dog, the longer I wait. I do not give Lepto, it is not prevalent in this area. I have never had a problem with this vaccine, no reaction to it...all my vaccinations are given sub-q, in the scruff of the neck, over the right shoulder. Never had any soreness, etc. |
