Day 60.... Hello everyone.. Well Poppy is on Day 60... Her milk come in yesterday. I took her temp this morning at 8am and it was at 37.8 (100.4). I took it again 11am and it was exactly the same. Ive just taken it again and it's now 37.0 (98.6). Still has a bit of jelly (think it's her plug) I usually see it after she's been a wee but I've also seen it even if she hasn't been to the toilet. She's had something to eat (only a small amount). She's not panting. She doesn't seem restless. She has (finally) had a little try at nesting but this is the 1st time she's done this that I've noticed!! She can't seem to get comfy. Keeps going from one bed to another, or different places on my floor etc... Does anyone think this could be the start of labour?? Thank you all in advance :-) x |
It does sound like it could be early labor. In the beginning when mild labor starts they will often shift positions when they are having a contraction. It is hard to tell in the beginning. As the labor progresses some females will really start digging. Does she have a favorite place to lay? It is very important that once the labor starts that she is in a location that she feels very comfortable. I take mine to the bedroom. I cover my bed with an old comforter and I have a big wicker dog bed that I place on my bed and that is where mine have their pups. I don't put mine in the basket until the last stages of labor. During the early stages I try to keep them calm and I mainly just watch. Usually they will have the urge to potty and pee more frequently as the labor progresses so I will let them get up and walk around if they need to but I make sure I don't let them out of my sight. |
She's been laying in her whelping box all day. Which isn't like her as she just likes laying everywhere. It's in my front room and I'm sitting with her and she's very calm and comfortable. Taken her temp and it's still 98.6. Has been exactly the same for 2 1/2 hours now. Wondering if it'll drop anymore or if that's enough? |
I would think it will drop more but you never know. |
Ok I'll keep an eye on her. Thank you! :-) I'll keep you posted.. Hopefully this is it! X |
Temp was 100.4 at 8am. Temp was 98.6 at 12:30pm.. It's been the same all day. Just taken it again 7pm and it's 98.8. So confused with all these temps? She isn't panting but does seem to be breathing a little faster. She normally doesn't mind me taking her temp but when taking the last one she seemed very uncomfortable and wriggled a little wanting it out. Xx |
Temp is now 98.7.... So it's been 10 hours now between 98.6/98.7/98.8. Still not panting. What do you all think? |
Lol, I won't even try to guess. After breeding yorkies for over 16 years I know that when it happens it happens. I don't even bother to take temperatures anymore because it is so unreliable. Try to get some rest. |
I was going to go bed but I'm worried about going to sleep and she progresses. I have been setting my alarm for every 2 hours though out the night just to check on her. Have you ever had a dog give birth with a steady temp similar to Poppy's? |

You will be so wore out by the time the pups get here. Some females have long labors and some go fairly quick. I hope you can get some rest. |
Like I said, not all mommas go textbook...some DO NOT fluctuate their temperature....she may never drop, never go off food, .......never nest until within a couple of hours out from whelping. Yes, you can have a female deliver without a temp drop.....I never hang my hat on textbook signs and symptoms.....after getting caught completely unaware one time! Takes only once...... Is your momma at your bedside? If she is, you can doze during the night...she will wake you up when she starts to rustle around in her whelping box/crate. |
Hi everyone.. Went to bed last night. Kept checking on her every hour. Still no pups. Still no panting. She's really calm and relaxed. |
Hopefully it will be soon. You really do need to try to get more sleep. You will be so wore out by the time the pups get here. Is there anyone else in the household that can help you keep an eye on her? |
Yes my partner is here but he has a full night sleep then I catch up on some during the day. I feel fine and have had enough sleep. :-) Thank you & as you said.. Hopefully not much longer. She's lost a bit of jelly again today. Hopefully more plug. Temp was 99 at 12pm. |
Just wanted to drop by and wish you all the best. And please do try to rest up if you can. Once the pups arrive, you'll need your energy and mental clarity. I'm not as experienced, but I do have a brand new litter and it is pretty exhausting work. Good luck to you and your little girl! |
