Day 57/58 Pregnancy.. Poppy is just going into day 58.. Her temps so far:- Day 55- 99.8 98.6 99.3 Day 56- 99.6 99.3 99.8 98.6 Day 57- 101. 100.6 98.2 Just wondering if anyone has experienced a high temp followed by a big drop at this stage?? Thank you all in advance :-) |
The temperature can vary a lot. If she is eating well her temperature might be more normal but if you take her temp when she has not eaten then it can run lower. Is she eating any better? Make a note as to when you take her temperature if it is before or after she eats something. Temperature drop does not always work as an indication of impending labor. I have taken temps on expectant females and their temperature would be normal and they would start labor not long after that. Hopefully your girl will go at least a couple more days before delivering. |
She's not been eating lots.. Just little and often (as much as I can get down her). I took her temp about an hour ago (forgot to add it on). She had something to eat between 10-10:30pm & it's now 98.7. So still low after she's eaten. Hoping she'll go until Monday/ Tuesday next week. I'm supposed to be out for my sisters birthday tomorrow for a meal. My partner is staying home with her. I'm just worried about leaving her so think I may cancel. I know it'll just be my luck that I'll get ready to go out and she'll go into labour!! |
How are things going? I hope you were able to enjoy your sister's birthday dinner. What kind of thermometer are you using? I remember in the past there were some people having issues with their bitches running low temperatures and they found that the thermometer they were using was not accurate. |
Hi BJH... Well today is Day 59.. Yes all is ok here still and we had a lovely night last night thank you. Was so worried that she'd start whilst I was out but my partner was here looking after her and she slept the whole time! Haha. I'm using a digital thermometer. I bought it in a whelping kit. I also purchased a different (more expensive) digital thermometer but both are giving the same readings. Poppy's belly keeps going hard a lot more today. She doesn't seem restless or in pain but I can see actual lumps in her belly and it's rock hard. Do dogs get Braxton hicks or similar like us? Her temp today has stayed between 99.4/99.2 all day today. Thanks for thinking of us :-) x |
Pups are also very active still. Do they have a temp drop and then goes back up before labour or does the temp drop and stay down until pups are born? I've read that both can happen. These temps are just so confusing to me. I had the highest recording on day 57 at 100. Then it dropped the same day down to 98.2. Day 58 started high again at 99. Then dropped back down to 98.2. Now day 59 and it's floating around 99.2/99.4 mark all day. Thanks |
Thanks for the update. It is not always easy to determine impending labor just based on temperature. As you have discovered the temperatures can be all over the place the week before the pups are born. Your girl might just run a low base temperature so you might eventually see a drop below 98 before she goes into labor. If her belly is going hard that could mean she is in early stages of labor or perhaps the pups are just dropping and getting into position. I pray she has them during the day so you don't have to pull and all-nighter. I hate those. Please keep us posted and good luck. |
Oh me too.. Although I've not slept well the last week anyway. Set my alarm for every 2 hours just to check on her and make sure she is still ok. Oh.. Her milk come in today too! Not bundles but defo in! It looks clear? She's not done any nesting yet either x |
The milk should look clear at this point. What you are seeing is colostrum. It's "liquid gold" for babies (human and animals) because it's packed full of antibodies. The milk won't change color until after the pups are delivered and there is a shift in the hormones. |
Thank you Rhetts mama. :-) |
