Stud Fee? One lady told me she charges a flat fee of $350, another said she takes her pick of the litter. I know the standard thing is to get the pick of the litter or the price of a pup, but the lady who charges $350 said she does that because Yorkie litters are typically small compared to larger breeds. What do you charge/pay, those of you that breed out? As I have said before, I am undecided as to whether or not to purchase my own stud, so for the first year, I will be breeding out with Gracie & Angel. Thank you for your input. |

I would never offer a pick of litter to someone that you do not know personally and trust, that happened to me on the first litter we ever had and ended in a huge mess! The lady that owned the stud offered me my own puppy back for $1,400.00 or she was selling him the next day because she needed the money.. I signed the puppy papers and placed the puppy with her.. I cried all the way home and it was over a 2 hour drive! To make a long story short the little male ended up in a bad breeding situation and this last summer I was offered the opportunity to purchase him back for $1,500.00 and I did!!!! Paying a straight stud fee works better in my opinion.. |
Ok. So, what is the typical price for a Yorkie in your area? How does the stud fee compare? Less? About the same? Thank you for your reply! |
stud fee A pup pick is not a typical arrangement..in all my years of breeding I have never had a show breeder ask for a puppy. Pay the fee and keep all the pups is wise. A fair fee for a non-champion is $400 to $500 IMO. Champions are not much more I have found. IF good stud service is available at a fair price, I would never own a stud with less then 4 bitches. |
I figure if i was in that situation. I personally would want to just pay the fee. Less trouble and you are breeding for the puppies anyway. So giving a pick of the litter just doesn't make sense to me. Also where can you go to find a champion stud for whatever fee? |

I can tell you why Yorkie Rose made her statement. A stud is not a household pet because he is many times not house-trainable. You use him 1-4 times a year for maybe a week at a time and the rest of the time, he is a mark-machine who must wear bellybands or you are gonna end up cleaning more than you can imagine. The expense of buying stud service for less than 4 bitches would be financially the best choice, as well.. |
Good point. Thank you. I'm still wondering how the stud fee compares to the actual price of a pup. |
