Question: Is it possible for a mommy to lose milk or... Stop producing milk after 2 1/2 weeks of delivery? I have a cocker spaniel that had puppies (6- 3 boys 3 girls) on Dec. 15th and it looks like she is not producing enough milk anymore or maybe she just doesnt want to feed.. any ideas? Thanks guys! |

Have the pups started losing weight? That would be a sure sign that mom isn't producing. Gracie doesn't look like she has any milk, but the pups do nurse and when I squeeze a nipple, some milk does come out. Are you giving her any liquids besides water? They needs lots of liquids to produce milk...goat's milk is a good one...just keep some down...or chicken boiled and deboned. They love the chicken...gives them plenty of protein and the broth is good for milk production as well. |
Cottage cheese is good. Are you sure she doesn't have enough milk? It might be she is just getting back on feeding them. Do you have a scale in the house (food scale works well) Check their weight everyday, you'll know if she isn't feeding them enough. Good Luck |
thanks guys... no they are not losing weight.... it just seems they are hungry all the time and she doesn't want to feed, sometimes she would rather play w/ my yorkies..... I squeezed her nipple and a bit of milk came out but not much... the area around her nipples are VERY red, I thought maybe it is hurting her..... I bottled fed them right now and they liked it but they are only two weeks and 5 days old....... |
They need to eat every 3-4 hours which means a lot less sleep for you. You need to pick up where mom can't. I had to do it with my current litter and also come home from work during the day to feed. A pain but they'll be 5 weeks old this Thursday and are happy little hams! |
Thanks guys... for some reason it does seem as though she doesn't want to feed anymore, she has not been with them these past couple of hours and she isn't looking for them or wondering where they are at..... I am bottle feeding the ones that are hungry in the mean time.... will keep you guys posted...... thanks for the advice.... :) |
