Breeders and hip problems? Help!! Hi! I'm new to yorkie talk!! :) I'm looking into getting another baby, as our dear yorkie passed on a year ago. Just wondering what anyones opinion is on a breeder not guaranteeing hips/knees? I was told this by a breeder and wasn't sure if this was normal? Thanks!! |
Unfortunately, knee & hip problems are not a 'Life threatening' situation, so most breeders do not cover this condition. Although a good reputable breeder will want to know of any problems that might creep up, that's in her line. You should ask them if they check/test the breeding stocks' Patellars & are OFA certified. Hope some more people knowledgeable in this area will chime in. |
Thanks! Just wondering, what does OFA stand for? |

My guess is a breeder who does not guarantee knees, and or hips for at least 1 year either might have a problem in their lines, or not confident in their lines. I feel that to only guarantee life threatening illnesses is not fair to an unsuspecting new owner that paid for a healthy, non-crippled puppy. I give 1 year on knees and hips, and 5 years on life threatening. Although hips and knees can be a problem after a year, it usually is from jumping off furniture, up and down stairs, or injuries that a breeder has no control of. I also have a problem with the 48-72 hour rule to have your puppy vet checked. Mine have their last Vet check a day or two from going to their new home. They are healthy or they wouldn't be going to a new home anyway. My Vet knows their history, their parents, and their vet check results. They are guaranteed.. period. |
most reputable breeders I know have some type of guarantee for patellas and hips. I have a one year guarantee against hip dysplasia, legge calve perthes and grade 3 and 4 luxatng patellas...basically leg issues that are severe enough to require corrective surgery. |
While Leggs Perthes often exhibits symptoms around 7+months, hip dysplasia especially if it is mild and especially in small breeds, may not be evident until years down the road. Offa doesn't certify hips until 2yrs old. To the OP: I would simply ask the breeder why she is doing things the way she does. Ask if her dogs are Chic'd have they passed the minimum health testing the www.ytca.org recommends. What are the health issues in her line(s) that she breeds. |
